1999 XJ Cherokee air bag warning light issues
« on: January 08, 2017, 03:18:56 PM »

Can anyone help out with my 1999 XJ Cherokee diesel sport air bag warning light which will not switch off, I have rep!Aced the clock spring although the original so one seems to be working but the light always do we back on, I have an MOT shortly and I am told it's a fail if the light comes back on after initial 7 second check. I wondered if the control module could be faulty or if the seat Safety belt system has anything to do with the circuits, have checked all fuses and nothings blown, everything else works perfectly.
I did have a problem a few weeks ago when the immobilizer and central door locking tripped everything out and it would not start but that turned out to be water condensation dripping onto the circuit board in the overhead console, it sorted it's self out when I dried everything and replaced the board with one from a spare console I had.
Any advice poi ting me in the right direction would be appreciated.
Cheers Ian

The airbag control module is under the left front seat and has a pressed metal cover above it. Other than the airbags and control module there are no other sensors or switches in the system. Might be worth trying unplugging and reconnecting it in case a bad connection has somehow manifested itself at the connector.

I have an intermittent light on my TJ, which is more common in colder weather. I've found that during or after a drive too or from work, when the Jeep's warmed up some, that turning the ignition off then on again gets the light to stay off after the self test. That might also be worth a try. If warming up the Jeep properly gets the light to stay off for you, a good drive before the MOT may help.

Hi Jonny
Thanks for the reply and suggestions, my control module is under the centre console not the front seat and a bit more difficult to get at but it's worth disconnecting and see if anything happens, taken the Jeep for long runs short runs stop starting driving, disconnected the battery and it still keeps coming back on, changed the clock spring thinking what else can it be but it's possible the modules faulty, I think there's still one in the 1999 Cherokee at my local scrap yard so will try changing it.
I read on a US forum the seats have a sensor inside that goes out when you sit on it I wondered if this was somehow connected to the air bag system or instrument lights??
If all else fails my son knows a dodgy MOT station, might have to admit defeat and take it there!!
Thanks for replying and I will check it out this weekend hopefully, shows coming  so might be out playing instead.

Interesting. The 99 XJ factory service manual shows the location as under the left front seat in both left and right hand drive.

The airbag system is pretty simple, just the control box (containing an accelerometer), airbags and clockspring - which you've already changed.

The only other thing I could suggest is finding a dealer or Jeep/Chrysler specialist that can communicate with the Airbag system and find out what the reported fault is using DRBIII.

Hi
I understand that the air bag control module was repositioned from under the seat to under the center console mid way through 1999 production, my XJ was built in June so I assume three change wwaas done around then, the brake system we LSO slightly altered around June 1999 as well, been there got the tee shirt when overhauling the brake system a couple of years back.
Going to change the module next, really don't want to get ripped with dealer's bills as you say it's a simple system so must be curable .
Thanks for the info and guidance will let you know if I sort it
Cheers Ian
