Easy/Quick check for LSD?
« on: February 08, 2016, 01:08:11 AM »

No, i'm not talking about some new thing the old bill have thought up for users of drugs but is there a quick, easy check i can do to find out if i have a Limited Slip Diff on my Jeep?

It's a 95 XJ Cherokee 4.0 Limited HO - someone on another forum mentioned to me a "Tow Pack" option that had a genuine towbar, uprated ATF cooler and a LSD and maybe a couple of other things too. It looks like it has the uprated ATF cooler but not sure if the towbar is genuine.

I did consider jacking the back end up and spinning one wheel by hand to see what the other did but wasn't sure if the 4x4 system would give a false result.

If anybody can tell me if that will give the usual result of the other wheel turning the same way as long as it's in neutral and 2WD is selected on the transfer box i'll do it that way, i don't fancy crawling under just to get numbers etc off the diff to then go searching for which numbers were LSDs!

All help appreciated thanks!

Aye should do, normal diff would have the other wheel spinning the other way, lsd will spin the same way.

It will have a Trac-Lok limited slip diff as standard, but it will probably be worn out by now, in which case it will behave like an open diff anyway.

Find a nice muddy field,  hammer the accelerator, if both wheels spin, limited slip diff, only one wheel spins, open diff :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:

You can try:

https://jeep.custhelp.com/app/jeep/eqlisting_detail/session/L3RpbWUvMTM5MzY0MzI4OC9zaWQvWGxOMmc2T2w%3D

Stick your VIN in (if made after 1998) and it should give you a build spec for your Jeep.  If made before 1998, the field method sounds good

Probably a useful link for owners of 98-on  but mines a 95 - thanks anyway!

It's still worth trying - it worked for our '97 ZJ.

I listened - and i replied! Sadly thanks to my poxy internet playing silly duckers at the moment the post didn't get through!

What i said was "Thanks Mike - that explains why the back end feels like it's winding itself up when manoeuvring in 4WD" or words similar with a couple of other minor comments which i can't remember now.

But i did listen - honest!  :icon_biggrin:

I'll have to exhume the VIN number and/or paperwork from wherever i've buried it first!  :icon_rolleyes:

I also found a muddy bit of ground last night to test it on. The offside wheel was in soggy, loose mud and the inside wheel was on firmer ground. Flooring it sohot me forward with a little bit of spin from the offside wheel unlike an open diff which would have just sat there with the offside wheel spinning.

So yes, it's definitely got a LSD on it. What's more it still seems to work after 1/4 million miles!  :icon_eek:  :icon_biggrin:
