Title: TJ ignition switch fix
Post by: thorna on June 28, 2017, 01:56:22 PM
Any ideas for a fix?
Engine Starts and stops fine but indicator/stereo circuit trips in and out all the time. Requires a key jiggle to get it back on which has now got hard to do. Indicators I can live without but loss of stereo is a pain.
Key and barrel are worn but an unused key doesn't help.
Any ideas before I start to dismantle it?

It is a common problem with TJ's.

I had to have a part replaced, twice over the time I owned my TJ.

Don't recall the part number, but it looks something like this:

Why not just add a diode from from the ign live to the aux live :-)

It's the ignition switch just like ivanidea linked. Mine actually went bad during my last MOT so I got a fail on wipers and indicators. I got there just after he'd had to close the job to get the next one started. I turned the ignition off and on again and everything worked again so I got the pass after a short wait.

I forget where I got mine from. I'd try Rockauto and ebay. Pic below is my old switch. The worst worn contact is the one that caused the problem. As you can see it isn't the only contact going bad, so tapping one circuit to feed the wiper/indicator/radio feed might just be adding to problems down the line.

Cheers guys; you've nailed it.
New one on order; fortunate as it's gone altogether now!
