Title: Sprung a leak!
Post by: craig on February 25, 2005, 10:20:00 PM
Does anyone of you technically minded birtys know if it is possible to replace the power steering box seals on my tj or is it a case of removing the box and getting it repaired/reconditioned by a specialist :?:

Have a look at:

also I found the Mopar Fluid was cheap from my local dealership £3.92 for a bottle (contents prob 1/2 litre or more will check tomorrow).

is it the top or bottom seal not 100% sure but think they are both dooable but the bottom one normaly needs a good puller to remove the pitman arm but as for the fluid hell i aint never paid for mopar fluid as long as it meets or exeeds dexron 2 grade any power steering fluid will do i get mine 5 gallon at a time less than a £1 litre that way but you can buy it a lot cheaper than mopar anyways

Had another look while replacing the much needed brake pads! There is good news and bad news..

The good news (i think) is that it is the top seal leaking so i wont have to worry about removing the pitman arm :?

But the bad news is that a further investigation has found that the n/s/f outer u/j has excessive play :(

Looks like thats next weekend sorted.(parts permitting)

Oh an if Dextron 2 is good enough for the all great oz then that will do for me :prayer:

Replaced the n/s uj and yes bubba it was dastard tight :!:

But does any of you clever dastards know how to change the top steering box seal? I had a look and it looks as if there is a metal hexagonal plate on the end of the box(where the steering coloumn shaft connects) and i cant for the life of me see how it comes off?

Any ideas :?  :?
