Axles and transfer box

Hello All

Can anyone please tell me a simple and definitive way of identifying the axles and transfer box fitted to my 1979 CJ7. I would like to change all the oils before I take her out.  :?

there is only 2 kinds of axel for your model year

rear amc 20

front dana 30
if its manaul its a dana 20 transfer case
if its auto its quadratrac transfer case  if its manual gearbox depends on no of gears if its auto it can only be a th 400

Can anyone please confirm that niether of these axles have a diff oil drain plug, and therefore the cover has to be removed in order to drain and refill the oils. I have had a quick look but everywhere is caked in crap.

you will need to suck out the oil through the hole that you fill it. or remove the cover. or you could always park the jeep on the tail and poor it out. :lol:

yup no drains pull the covers gives you a good op to check for any damage or wear off intrnals

Could anyone please check 4WD.com for me to confirm that I have the right diff cover gaskets. Part No. 3172122 and 34684.  :smt023

The AMC 20 seems straight foward enough, but not too sure about the Dana 30.   :?

If it helps, i just use instant gasket (the silicone stuff) works fine, no leaks :shock:
