Any idea ?
« on: January 26, 2014, 01:25:21 PM »

Anyone know what the amp output on a standard 97 XJ alternator is ?
I've seen one on the bay for £56 (new) with a 90A output, just want to know if I it's worth spending on now the winch is fitted.

90a is standard
what you want is a
136 amp Denso, part #56027913,
off a 5.2v zj

not really an answer but more chucking some light on the subject...... :icon_super:

my YJ alternator is 80 or 90 and my GC was 130
I was going to change to a more powerful one but .......things got in the way......

I do have 2 1000CCA batteries on the YJ with an 8274 running a 6hp motor and a weekend of winching with engine running does not cause a prob.........
But being a trailer queen they get a recharge when home.......  Guess the long drive home in your case would charge them.........

what I'm suggesting I guess is when you have your twin battery set up running give it a try before offloading more wedge...... On an alternator........

here's some anorak info from when I was planning the change......
a V8 GC has a 135 amp alt part no 56027913
A 98 5.9 GC V8 has 150 amp alt part no 56041394AA

The 90 amp YJ or 4.0 litre ones are
56005685
59005685
56027912
Hope that helps :icon_super:

Cheers. :) I was thinking of changing the alternator rather than twin batteries and split charger, as there's a few folk talking about 50mm cabling from the second battery. I was thinking of bigger battery, then a bit further down the line, an uprated alt if needed. Seemed to be the cheaper/less hassle than split charge.
BUT, Birtys may know different. :D

and this.

Be aware that if fitting another standard jeep alternator that the ecu controls the charge rate.

This is a general question not specifically related to Phils question. When using the winch does the alternator not charge enough to reload the battery?

A winch can pull 400A on full load
the average alternator pums 90A max but not at low engine revs
so to recharge your battery would take about 45 mins to get back to full charge after say after 5 mins of heavy winching  if the engine is getting a good run

So basically when heavy winching you could drain your battery even if the engine is running??

I have yet to use the winch in anger but noticed when playing with it that it altered the tone of the engine.

It's not drawing 400A all the time though - most winching and driving situations uses a lot less and with the revs slightly raised the battery doesn't drain that fast. It's the heavy stuck in gloop pulls that do it. Raising the revs from idle to about 1500rpm helps a lot too.

Earlier chrysler voyagers (caravans) may have come with the 160 amp/hr alternator that is literally plug & play on the Grand Cherozee ZG / ZG  I will try to dig up the link. There are plenty of these about.

Isn't the way that alternators work is that they allow the battery to "suck" up to a certain ampage, rather than "pushing" that ampage all the time? (if that makes sense)

Instead of doing the split charge .......which has caused some people a headache all by itself......

Just have two batteries of the same size........

You then have the option of what you do......

both running together all the time......(I favour this setup)

OR run the winch from the extra battery.......use fat cable 50 or 60 cmsquare you can then run down the road with bothcharging and then throw a switch for winching and isolate the two so that your ability to start if you stall is always there.
Cost you a battery and cable and big switch which is £40 ish.......
