Title: Squeaky Steering
Post by: XJ Fan on August 26, 2018, 04:59:22 PM
I was working on the XJ yesterday, and noticed a squeak when I was turning the steering wheel. What's the likely cause? and is there anything I can grease or lubricate to help alleviate it?

Early TJs had a rubber boot where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. Spraying some grease into the boot from inside the Jeep fixes it till the next time. Maybe your XJ has the same rubber boot.

I’ll take a look. It does sound a physical contact issue through the column, so you may be right.

My XJ does the same and it is definitely the rubber boot. Usually worse when cold. A quick squirt of silicone grease stopped it completely.

Excellent, thanks. Can I get to it from the driver’s footwell?
