Title: Bit of a lift
Post by: Suze162 on September 23, 2014, 09:25:19 PM
Right then guys.....
I want to give my Jeep a bit of a lift.....couple of inches......so....
I have some 15x8 wheels coming soon which I will be putting new tyres on.  At the minute I have 30 x 9.5 x 15
Firstly what 'must' I do/have ?
Secondly what could I do/have ?
A list of things to get would be super..... :098:

it would go for a 3" to 3.5" lift any more then you need to spend a lot more as you will need to look at slip yoke eliminators  and other drive line mods.
Sway bar disconnects are good too

Really? Thought I'd have to go for less than that to avoid more mods  :icon_biggrin:

Yes .....that's right......it was all your fault  :098:

I need a lift kit now.....more power etc etc and it's all your fault!!  :steeringwheel:

Best way though? And if I get on to 31's do I need to change anything else? Gearing etc?
Title: Re: Bit of a lift
Post by: Bubba on September 23, 2014, 10:35:00 PM
you would be ok at 31s and no other changes needed

So.....just spacers? Surely I need something else?

no not on a tj  dont think you will need to mess with anything else certainly no extra parts
Title: Re: Bit of a lift
Post by: wildwood on September 23, 2014, 10:39:41 PM
You'll be OK with 31s.....

Just realised you have a 2.5 litre engine?????

So will be Ok but you could use deeper gears to get back some sparkle!
Yours are 4.10 and going to the deepest possible 4.88 will make life on the road much more liveable with.......and might even allow a 33 x 10.50 to grace your arches.......

Tis a jeep and guaranteed to give you a nice slim wallet with no unsightly bulge in yer strides :hysterical:

4.88 is the ticket for 33s

beauty of a budget lift is you can sell it when you go bigger
Title: Re: Bit of a lift
Post by: robsrotti on September 23, 2014, 10:46:19 PM
You really need to think about what you want, otherwise the money you spend now will soon be getting replaced with something bigger and better.
A 3.5in short arm kit from Rubicon Express will give you what you are looking for and is hard to beat for quality
It all depends on how deep your pockets are
Title: Re: Bit of a lift
Post by: Bubba on September 23, 2014, 10:49:17 PM
agreed  but a 4inch from lama will leave change to buy most of the tyres but it does all depend what you want

as rob says think carefully and spend once

Right then Kev, I'll get a cost on this and then make sure I'm wearing the jeans with the right size pockets  :098:
I know it's never gonna be the best off roader....just want to have a bit of fun with him and still get to work the next day  :icon_biggrin:

Cheers Kev, I'm sure I'll be spending a bit more time in this section  :icon_biggrin:
Title: Re: Bit of a lift
Post by: wildwood on September 23, 2014, 10:58:46 PM
You're off roading ability ......or rather that of your Jeep is with the axles rather than the lift.....

I am sure you can squeeze 31s in with just a boost lift of rubber pucks 1" or so....

The real offroad ability will be the axle ratios...... 4.88 and the lockers....... Speak to Gaz he has soft lockers or similar..........they will allow you to go most of the places I took you........
Add a winch at some time later and you are bullet proof........

Stray any further and ........

You'll end up on a trailer........like moi! :icon_biggrin:

Just go for the pucks for now.
You never know what may pop up on here in the exchange and mart in the future  :icon_biggrin:

Out of the box the OME 2" is the best option by far. Absolutely no need to go taller.

OME is very good and you could put 31s on with no other work and equally you could go down the route of high clearance arches and re-gearing and put 35s on with the same lift.

Just to clarify, because I think it's got lost in the thread, a TJ will go onto 31s with no other work at all. Mine and many others run like this.

It is going to be noticeably slower to accelerate though, especially with the 2.5.

Yes....noticed I had the space already that would allow that  :icon_biggrin:
Still wanting a lift though....just looking at the OME ones.....nice  :098:

Just noticed that YT is selling his Rough Country + 3" springs ....... Think they fit a TJ......
Bit of a saving for you.

Rough Country stuff is available from David (I like a chat!) at Llama so you could source the other stuff from him.......

No one has mentioned body lifts........ Tall ones look retarded BUT a 1" lift will give more clearance for those full articulation moments and also allow the jet wash to get to parts that otherwise will develop crud and rust......

Even choices to confuse you.........

Personally .....If you can afford the OME 2" lift and can throw a body lift on.    £120 ish.
Then you are sorted for good and it will drive on the road better than some of the cheaper and harsher kits.

Can I get OME in the UK? Or is it US only?

You can get OME in the uk but with limited outlets. Reason being is their cost as they are towards the top end of the quality stakes. Rubicon express, ome, clayton are at the top end (personal opinion will always factor heavily) Llama4x4 sells alot of rough country mainly because they are cheap but he can obtain other brands if required. You just have to ring and face the big talking session

Being bit by the bug for sure LOL, Your doing the right thing and asking for advice, now take your time and decide what you want/need from your Tj as the least expensive route is always the right route first time, as it gets really expensive buying kit after kit to get to where you want to be. Have fun  :icon_super:
For the record the bug will bite harder and harder  :icon_eek:

advice from an ex TJ owner who has done it a couple of ways

From a stock TJ first purchase is 31" tyres, just need to adjust your steering stops
Then go 1" body lift with a 1" motor mount lift to keep future vibes and angles good, this will give you no need for spacers and will be good for the future mods
Next is your lift, 2" OME is really good on and off road and will get you most places and teach you how to drive

If you go any bigger with the 2.5 you need to re-gear and sell a kidney.

I wouldn't go for cheap options, they are just that and don't be afraid of buying from the USA, the pound is good

found one with 2 of my trucks
http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=3042

left hand 97 has 2" teraflex, very big lift for 2", 33's no regear, 1" motor and body lift, flexed like a bastard
right hand 03 has 2.5 " OME, 31's, no regear, 1" motor and body lift, got most places the other one did, ground clearance the only issue

Not clear on the "not a Jeep owner these days"  :jpshakehead:

Makes a lot of sense what you've said, not hoping to conquer the world like some of the guys (and they could), just have a bit of fun and avoid as much damage as possible  :098:

Thanks again Steve  :icon_biggrin:

Some very sound advice given by folks who have gone down this road, MOCAJ has pretty much nailed it.

Whatever you do, TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!

Ours has a 2" OME lift, as it has heavy replacement bumpers & a hard top, the springs do (or did) come with different weights for different extra's added.
Go any higher & thats when you have to start spending big on other drive train mods.

We run 31's & have fitted 1.1/2" wheel spacers but this is not needed.

Had to have some diff work done so took the opportunity to re-gear it because the 31's made a big difference to our Auto.

We have True Trac limited slip diff front & rear. Where this wont go off road I dont want to take the truck probably.

Even extreme lifted trucks still get stuck, just a bit further

If you stilll want to use it daily dont go above 2" & its still usable

& TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!

I have no Jeeps at the moment but gone from stock to pretty well modded, I know most of the pitfalls etc with a TJ

My advice is go slowly and learn to drive your Jeep. Folks just seem to fit big lifts, tyres and drive anywhere. That is fine until you fail, then they don't know what to do.

If you start small and learn to drive you will be an awesome driver and a safe one, a TJ on 31's can give you great fun, ask Gaz

I am .....taking my time.....taking advice and asking the people in the 'clever section' of Birty's  :098:

All the guys have been great, yes I do want to keep it as a daily drive so don't want to go too extreme with this one and I don't want to keep changing stuff.  I'm sure there'll be a few PM's floating about shortly so I get it right first time  :098:
