Title: ZJ over heating
Post by: jay140285 on August 21, 2014, 08:41:50 AM
Thoughts,

Bubba is confident the radiator is close to the end of its usefulness.

I still have a binding caliper which I am trying to sort asap.

But driving on country roads and into town its fine not getting hot at all.

As soon as I get onto the motorway its over heating, literally hit 65mpg and cruise and the temp just rises into the red.

Any thoughts.

Collapsing hoses?

How do I test that, get it up to temp and have someone rev the engine whilst I watch hoses?

Not enough flow through radiator at higher speeds as an initial thought.
At slow speeds the pump pushes the water around the system and the radiator can cope. At motorway speeds the heat incease from the engine is not being taken away by the radiator, this could be due to it being blocked by silt or rust from the engine block, a coolant flush may help but if the rad is toast then a swap is required. What state is the pump? Vane erosion of the impellas due to cavitation could be a cause of poor flow

How can I see what condition the pump is in. Do u need to physically remove it?

Also check that rad cap is OK , I had loss of fluid thro that as the rubber sealing gasket in the cap had gone hard.
It will be a toasted rad...... I had this on the YJ same symptoms as you. Fins falling off on the inside where you can't see them and build up of mud. Also rust on the inside, just makes it less efficient.

Rad cap is ok, the pressure it was holding in last night confirmed this.

Kev did a flush and clean rad as best as he could. But reported to me last night he thinks it's on it's last legs and I guess Harptree probably killed it off even more. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/08/21/3c55d6eb639063eddf856a629e0af28c.jpg)

that might be a contributing cause, loss of fins between rad galleries reduces cooling ability. Rads are not really designed to cope with wet mud

pump inspection requires removal = new gaskets on refit

Cool (or not in this case), I will remove rad and replace. I can get an XJ one just not sure it is will fit. Failing that I need to wait till payday but it cuts it fine  for CF. I will check pump as well as hoses.

Look at the links i posted, In your OTHER rad thread, then look at the pics of XJ rads.

They're not the same.

I went for a 'cheapo' one for the YJ when the original one turned into a sieve. Not had any problems with it.

Link to the ZJ 4.0 rad from the same seller:

That looks ideal thanks Tim.

To be honest it does very little miles so should be fine.

That looks a good price, one for my xj was £110 (2 year warranty) couple of years back.

re-core,

should e plenty of places in brum that will recore a rad, might be able to suggest a better option if you tell them what its for and its use

So then post Harptree & all the fun you, Sarah & Bryn had repeatedly playing in liquid chocolate, it seems your rads screwed, young Bryn has had similar & other issues & the auto box on the TJ has had to be re-built due in part to wear & tear but also excessive heat said the nice man as I handed over a cheque for £980  :icon_eek:

There's a learning point in there somewhere but I cant quite put my finger on it  :003:

Errrr I believe Mrs Roberts paid for the TJ work!

I also think they are just random events not related

That's exactly what I've been telling people! They don't believe me that the two idler pulleys and radiator are wear and tear items!

Well I don't care, I had a bloody good day playing in the mud :jump_125: :jump_125: :jump_125:
and if it ended up costing me nearly £1,000 that's the price I have paid for having fun  :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

I have to say, in my defence, I was lead astray by the Hoban bloke and his very young side kick Bryn boy :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:
but the offer was there, and what was a girl supposed to do, be rude not to  :steeringwheel: :steeringwheel: :steeringwheel:

note to self, stick to knitting and kittens from now on  :icon_redface: :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

Errrr if you wanted to take up my offer of playing dirty it's not my fault.

What has Nat told you? Following me in the jeep or on a horse will get you into trouble!

You guys are going to have to look at Willo's rig to design your own " rad in the rear" system.
Problem solved...... :icon_twisted:

Or lift the Jeep more so the rad is out of the goo  :003:

Only ever had a prob with the YJ when I was nose down in the goop at Tong....... Still a road Jeep on 35s.......had to throw buckets of water at it at a service station on the A1 to clear the rad.

Height is King........

And just when I get there the fashion changes to LCG (low centre of gravity)......

Mind you fashion......what's that?????? I'm still dressing like Rory Gallagher circa 1972  :icon_biggrin: happy days.

Hummmm think I may have solved this one! Radiator after 20mins with pressure washer was still running muddy water but I can now see through all the fins!

Also the air filter was thick in mud so very little air getting through.

Removed the aircon rad whilst at it.

What are the thoughts of radiator bibs when off roading in mud?
