does anyone know, if a 6 speed manual box out of a late TJ will go straight into an earlier TJ that currently has a 5 speed box in it , any help is very appreciated.

The mid TJ manual nv3550 should be a simple swap with little to no modification I believe.
The 05/06 nsg370 has the bellhousing built in and the 4.0/2.4 mounting is different. The CKP sensor mounting changed so you'd need an adapter kit to move the CKP sensor to the front of the engine I think. I don't know if you could use the 05 sensor with the 97 flywheel as the flywheel changed for 05/06.
Edit: not read through these but info may help some...

I’ve just sold a 6 speed, it didn’t look like a straight swap, as said the cps is in a different location, it’s on the other side of the bell housing and it looked different,

ok thanks, i will just stick with the 5 speed i think.
