The rear X member on my CJ7 is rotted out and needs replacing.

With the limited resources available, the best plan I can think of is a length of 80x80x3 box section, cut down longways to the "C" section needed.

There is a plasma cutter at work which should do nicely for this.

Anybody got any sensible alternatives please?

buy a channel rather than a box that way you will not have to cut it

Thanks for the input.

AFAIK commercial rolled steel channel is hot rolled and has square edges and tapered flanges - much thicker than 3mm in 80x40 size.

If I could find 80x40 cold rolled with straight 3mm sides and rounded edges that would be ideal.

On the Scrambler i got a metal fabricators to fold me a bit of steel to the correct size and dimensions, cant remember how much it was but it didn't cost a lot.
A bit more work with the slitting disc and drill using what remained of the old one as a template and it was done and looks nice and original :greggmo:
