Hi Everyone,

I have a late WJ 2005 Grand Cherokee with a Mercedes 2.7 CRD engine in it.

It has 158,000 miles and is a good work horse doubling up as a ambliance in the very bad weather last winter.

Just recently it has developed a fault where the engine will cut out under acceleration/load at around 3000 rpm. It will just die with no engine managment lights coming on. As the car is still rolling I can restart and continue to drive it. It will quite happly rev up when at a stand still without cutting out.

I have changed the fuel filter, crank sensor and completed a bleed off test on the injectors which all seem fine, the air filter is also ok.

I did have the local gurage have a look but they haven't a clue so I thought I would ask in here as I think it is quite a commen fault and there is a lot of knowlage.

I am in North Shropshire UK.

Thanks

Hi John,

I had one of those and had all the other WJ related surprises but not what you describe.

Surely sounds like fuel starvation of somesorts.

I thought it might be fuel starvation hence changing the fuel filter and others have said a worn fuel pump, but I would expect to see the fuel issue show its self when at a stand still and running at high revs.

I am thinking of the pressure sensor on the fuel rail, but then I would expect this to activate at any time not just when the car is travelling so maybe electrical as the engine suddenly cuts out when travelling so must factor in the vibration and motion when fault finding.

Its the wife's car so I might have to upgrade to a wk to keep her mobile.

Take it to a Bosch diesel centre.

Thanks to other posts on the forum I have read the engine fault codes which were:

1130 - Fuel rail pressure sensor
0702 - Transmission electrical control system
0100 - Mass flow circuit
0190 - Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit
0836 - Four wheel drive pressure sensor

After googling a bit more I have found another who had the same problem and it appeared to be a dirty (build up of oil) Mass (air) flow sensor. I am going to see if it can be cleaned and if not replace with a second hand one to see if it cures the fault.

She seems to like driving it so it looks like its is a big thumbs up for now.

Thanks

Hi , sometime P1130 is also to due fuel low pressure. .. Insiders fuel tank there is fuel sending unit with a filter ..Maybe it Block flow at high rev. For mass flow you can check it with a tester as : P2 e P4 pinout

Thanks,

For confirming what P1130 is and i finally have got around to replacing the mass air flow sensor. The old one was actually damaged so I thought great this is it, But and the big but is that it has made no difference and the car still cuts out at around 3000 rpm under load.

Running the fault codes again I get the following:
1130 - fuel rail pressure (thanks Tanojeep)
702 - Transmission control system
100 - MAP sensor
190 - ? fuel rail pressure sensor
836 - four wheel drive circuit
700 - check transmission DTC in/out put speed sensor.

I would assume the MAP sensor fault would have been due to the cutting out and so possibly the 190/1130 as the engine will rev quite freely when in natural parked on the drive with no load, but get it on the road and accelerate hard and boom (3000rpm (ish) it will cut out, but allow you to restart the engine as you are free wheeling along.

Time for a few pints and to have a think..... any thoughts

I've had the speed sensor wiring fail.
I replace them all the way to  the ecu.
that did all sorts of wired things to the jeep. it put the jeep into limp mode !!!!

worth a look ?

that may account for 836 & 700 codes

Hi everyone,

I finally got to the bottom of this issue! In this case the problem was the PCB for the transmission, probably an unusual fault but with the new card it drives just perfectly.

What is the PCB and where is the card not heard of this fault before ?
