Managed to grab an hour on the CJ today, so started prepping for the engine swap, front wings are now off, next (Monday) its props, transfer and gearbox off AGAIN. :#-o:
-
cool. get stuck in dood.
-
Did you leave any mud on the site?
-
didn't you think about cleaning the mud off to start with ?
-
didn't you think about cleaning the mud off to start with ?
Would love to but can’t drive it to jet wash and neighbours moan like f@ck if I do it out side the house, all that’s left is to clean the bits in the back yard as they come off.
-
must be getting old, had bit more time today (Tans in garden carving some stone so she is leaving me alone
by the way this is her weekend project

wow! thats lovely!
red or white.....
-
oi, masonary, on another, I thank you 8-)
-
Not your headstone is it mate?
-
not mine Tim, that would need to be a LOT bigger..
anyway back to the saga, Dan was a no show today so working by my self still managed to make some progress.
transfer is off, front cowl is off and most of the bits have been removed just the power steering, throttle cables and gearbox to do, but will wait now till engine stand turns up before i do any more now.

Off thread so will just introduce here.
I have a bull bar push bar very similar to NB (red tho) came with 8274 very heavy.. anyone want? free to collector.
-
Shame its so far away, would have likede to have tried it against mine.Had to take off the big shiny bull bar to fit thewinch bumper but it looks bare now and i was thinking of a bolt on a frame to fit my spots to
-
Tank
If ya still up for it by Cheapfest I could drag it along.
Originally nailed to a Isuzu and prior to that a Suzuki... threwth??!!
But I guess a bit of a BFH and some metal melting and it'll fit anything!
-
Nice one! Thanks for that
-
new toy has arived, just waiting for phone call to say block is ready to collect now
Photo0048 (WinCE).jpg[/attachment:105gevtm]
-
Pic of red bull bar on Sale and Wanted now
-
got ok to collect engine on Saturday, but no van till Thursday but getting closer, cant wait
-
the 360 has landed
-
cool.
-
:headbang:
-
Started to remove ancillaries and gave it a bit of a clean today.
Could do with some help with the vacuum pipes, sure they cant all be needed.
-
mmmmm :smt044
-
vacuum pipes are normally needed for a reason. reminds me of a mk1 golf with a vacuum based carb which was a nightmare to sort out so they got swapped for a webber
-
dump them septin one for the dizzy
-
The reason I ask is there seems to be a load going to what I think was a cruse control and some that seem linked to the air con both of which I wont be using. The only one not connected when I got the block was the one to the dissy and don’t know which one it should be
-
could also do with a rebuild manual if anyone knows who sells one
-
just save the distributor vacuum feed and blank the rest off, most of the piping was for california emmisions compliance.
-
only a minor step forward but a step forward none the less, got the dissy cleaned and rebuilt :icon_super:
-
hows this coming along? what are you doing with this? rebuilding as standard or moding (cam, bore, pistons etc) ?
-
going in standard this time, still saving for some bits I need to move forward :011:
-
thats cool, good engine to work on too
-
I now have the upper engine mounts and plate ready to mod the frame rail.
just need a second pair of hands for the swap, any volenters?
-
where are you at mate - pm me your postal code, cant remember how far off you were.
-
thanks of the offer JJ, had a father/son day today and finally pulled the 4.2 out with Dans help.
next is to mod the right side frame mount, will be cutting the top off the old FSJ mount and metal gluing it to the original CJ mount.
then swap g/box, clutch and flywheel and the V8 is ready to fit :003:

-
hmmm wont be ready for turkey hunt then ?
-
still on schedule for Turkey Hunt,
have frame mount back now fully welded (my welder wasn't man enough so got a m8 to do it) V8 should get fitted with clutch and box Saturday and fitted in CJ on Sunday,
then have 2 weekends to get ancillaries and wiring refitted, in time for a workshop slot to fit new rear leafs and shackles all round.
that will leave me all of November to get exhaust made, :100:
-
good and bad day today, had to do stuff Saturday so started today.
got all the bits i need off the 4.2, one problem is there is no spigot bush in the V8 and cant order one till Moday with god knows delivery time with strikes on.
did get a load adjuster for the engine crane, best 30 quid i spent in a long time.
-
get the right size steel bar to fit the old spigot pack the spigot with grease use hammer to thwack the drift through the spigot and out it pops
-
Yes seen it done....
-
will try that tomorrow, all showered and slobbing infront of the TV now :icon_jook:
-
grease trick worked a treat, spigot bush fitted by 9am, went a bit south from there :jpshakehead: after a clean up of the fly wheel noticed a load of cracks on the friction face, prob just glazing cracks, with with the amount of wear (about 2mm) decided to try and acquire a replacement.

thought best make the best of a bad day and fitted the block, less flywheel, clutch & gearbox, went in a treat, the modded frame mount lined up and is now all comfy in it new resting place :icon_biggrin:
-
a crack is a crack even if you want to call it a glazing crack. you dont want those propergating. it's quite impressive what a failed flywheel can do
-
6 months after starting looks like I'm getting close now, got use of m8s warm, dry workshop for the weekend, hoping to get most of the bolt on stuff done, def want to get the underside sorted.
-
cool reinforcements could be on the way tomorrow
-
its shit bein outa action mate so it must be a great feelin NB gettin near done :023:
-
good day today with only a few minor snags to sort in the morning, hit my target of getting flywheel, clutch, gearbox, trans and props fitted, took and age to get the gearbox mount to line up, had to loosen the block and hang off it to reposition it, snags are 3 bolts, lost 1 UJ strap bolt but think I have some spares in the workshop, and 2 bolts from the bellhousing, on the 4.2 they were through bolts with nuts on the V8 they are blind bolts but again no issue quid each max from factors on Monday.
tomorrow it gets harder, putting the ancillaries back onto the block and try and work out the elect and fuel, off now to sacrifice a few gerbils in hope of reinforcements :100:
-
hope of reinforcements :100:
maybe you should have said something alittle sooner you twit. lol ohh and what axles you got under that pig again? deff think you might be pushin some limits soon
-
all std D35 up front just new bearings and seals, read AMC20 with alloy USA onepiece shafts again all new bearings and seals.
only got chance of workshop wednesday and not confirmrd till friday lunchtime
-
yuo have pm dood

It's Alive
-
sweeeeeeeet :greggmo:
where the video, and more importantly, where is that V8 soundtrack :icon_super:
nice one mate, made up for ya!
-
gota say it ran mainly thanks to Bubba.
only run for 30 seconds or so, no cooling system fitted yet nor exhaust and a couple of small fuel leaks and a stuffed solenoid to sort but sounded like the sweetest music ever.
did make me twitch when we spotted the fuel leak as at that time there was foot long flames coming from the exhaust ports. all in all a good weekend of Jeep fixing
-
good job mate - and dont be scared of the sparkly fire - its your friend
-
did make me twitch when we spotted the fuel leak as at that time there was foot long flames coming from the exhaust ports. all in all a good weekend of Jeep fixing
so you haven't seen footage from santa pod or drag racing then ? they do that all the time, no flames cause for concern
-
wasnt the flames that worried me it was the petrol gushing out of the fuel pipe inches away from said flames that made me twitch :jump_125:
-
petrol dont burn it's the fumes you got to worry about,
been there, welding on my old beetle. inside went up, lucky i had two 2ltr dry powder extinguishers to hand, yep you can't breathe that stuff and i needed 1 and half of the other to put it out. lucky for me i took the origional seats out
-
sorry to tell ya but if you pour gas on an open flame...............(wait for it).............. itll ignite.
it does have a flash point of 475 °F (246 °C for you odd people) and saying most rigs egt temps at the cat is 500 plus
-
got the new clutch linkage fitted, feels like a new cars clutch peddle now :icon_biggrin:
old solenoid definitely shot, took it apart and was full of rust. fitted a new solenoid, but not quite right yet. turns over OK if +&- applied to terminals but if i try and start on the key it turns over but starter doesn't stop spinning when key turned off.
had a chat with the auto elec where i bought the solenoid and of the few causes he suggested I recon the most likely is the alternator, we had trouble getting the plug in due to bent terminals and it's the unit that came with the engine so has been sat in a field for 8 years, still have the 4.2 alternator which i believe is the same so will fit that tomorrow and see what happens.
-
is this the same motor kingcj has in his cj? he has had one hell of a time keep starters on that thing? i think the kirton mud has something todo with it, but still doesnt add up to me.
-
nahh the altinator is crudy for sure but i dont think thats the problem i think the new selonoid is wired back to front or its the wrong model to be compatable
-
think the fuel leak is fixed, new pipe and replaced a seal, done some asking around on the solenoid and am now sure the pattern part is not compatable, correct part ordered from Lighthouse.
Rad is at mates workshop having the side bracket brazed back on, so with a bit of good weather might get front bodywork back on this weekend.
-
proper jeep solenoid and problem sorted :003:
-
told ya my good man
-
good show
-
yeah it is, knowin wot its like to keep waitin for a bit of V8 xcitement im still made up fo ya, and feelin v green ya gonna get there way quicker than me :011:
-
i am thinkin of junkin out my 4.2 and throwin in a spare v8
-
do it, you know it makes sense
if not you'll have to change your name to I6 Bubba
-
i am thinkin of junkin out my 4.2 and throwin in a spare v8
does it run?
-
yup
-
hmmmmm, u thinkin of sellin it?
-
no never sell v8s yours was a very sad one off
-
nah, i meant sellin the 4.2?
and sorry for the momentary hijack NB :icon_winkle:
-
why you need a super sexy rebuilt 4.2
-
I got a 4.2 that needs a rebuild
-
coz i got an engineless and gearboxless lifted cj7 sittin behind a shed somehwere is rural kent that im thinkin can be punted out as an un-mot'd truck that has an engine/box sittin the bed for the lucky punter to stick in themself. fleabayers are sellin at around what i paid for it but the only spare engine & box i got at the moment is the 360/th400, i really really dont wanna lost that until i know what else is gonna be sittin on my drive in the near future.
im guessin 'super sexy rebuilt' will be cost prohibitive, so maybe one of FJ's rattlers will still be the best option, or I will just sling in the rover V8 instead
-
if i was witch witch i aint i would fling the rover v8 and whatever box it had in the back and wop it on ebay and pitch it as a handsome landy hot rod jeep and say it was so fast and cool that you scared yoself sooo bad you had take the engine out so you wouldnt kill ya self or lose ya licence burnin them ferraries off
-
BD I have a engine and box here both need work but are serviceable and if you want i can wait till its sold for any payment
-

:hysterical: top class dood :greggmo: its been crossin my mind, especially with the huge (homemade shackle) lift to make it a BEAST on the road
BD I have a engine and box here both need work but are serviceable and if you want i can wait till its sold for any payment
and thats more than v decent of ya NB, may well take u up on that if u can wait until feb/mar ?
-
can wait till 2012 if it helps :icon_biggrin: just happy to clear the space and not to have to scap em
-
i cant wait for the ebay add
-
where is the photos? i need photos!!!
and BD you have FJs in your lawn??
-
mr ferret has at least 2 fsj and aroun another 10 other jeeps

-
yup, FJ = Ferretjuggler - if its an old jeep, and for sale, he wants it !!
ohhh nm though u meant toyota fj
-
small update,
wiring loom mods completed, some rerouting some extending.
have the repaired radiator back, not found a fan cowl but have plenty of ally sheet here so might fab a basic cowl for now,
Bubbas loan of an exhaust has been a life saver as fenderwells on back order with 4wd, they should be here and fitted Monday if gaskets arrive in time from Lighthouse.
that just leaves 2 main rad hoses to sort, might be able to use one or both from original but recon they may be perished, if so I will have to acquire new, prob easiest will be to get silicons from local tuner shop.
if all goes to plan will be drivable by next weekend, and with luck Dave will have some room in his workshop over the weekend and i can get some fine tuning done, i.e. reroute some pipes, fit centre console and radio and tune the engine ready for some little event coming up the weekend after :icon_jook:
-
i gather it's got or will have MOT
-
had me worried then :pokinit: its ok ins, tax and ticket to start next year
-
Rad is now fitted bar bottom hose, when I used old hose the fan hit it, sort of circular saw style. got a plan so not to worried.
Headman headers repaired and one side fitted, had to remove sliders as they were where the four into one wanted to be, again no biggy as will just make new mounts but not urgent.
-
and we're not going again :010:
engine runs allright but still got a petrol leak from carb body (not pipe this time), and it will need a rebuild. Rad is doing a great impression of a colander and needs a recore plus there are various leaks from the hoses, will need some new and some of the castings will need cleaning a bit better. there's no way i can get funds together in time so i think i'm going to wait till all the bits are here and aim to be ready for Birtys Breakout in March
I'm now off to drown my sorrows in pizza
-
i know the feeling mate, ive busted more deadlines than i can count. dont let it kick ya, just keep crackin away and itll get there.
-
well the saga of the world longest engine swap continues (sorry BD 2nd longest) carb rebuilt and as usuale in this house everyone uses the jump pack but no-one knows how to put it on charge :banghead_125: so cant test it, battery and jump pack both on charge now so maybe tomorrow. Rad is out ready for a trip tomorrow to rad referb shop.

mudderfucker :003:
pressure is on tho dood, im gettin there :icon_super:
-
shoulda left that carb the hell alone
-
shoulda left that carb the hell alone
your joking m8, it was putting more fuel on the floor than into the manifold
-
 no more fuel leak
rads been taken to Advanced Cooling, and after a chat with the bloke he has given me an upgrade option, can have the standard twin core that is currently fitted or make it a triple core, price difference is about 20 quid and should give a 30% efficiency increase. :003:
-
bit of a no brainer there
-
Great that you are making progress - a photo would be nice...
-
nothing photo worthy yet, rad only dropped of today but if I get back from the auctions on time tomorrow might do a vid with sound of it running on just headers, it sounds so sweet :003:
-

ohh man :icon_super: shuper shexy :icon_super: jammy bugger!
-
if its dry for a few hours tomorrow might try to set the ignition timing, my manual only covers the 304 and not sure what to set it at, I'm guessing from what I trawled on the net its going to be about 8*BTDC. can anyone confirm or correct this?
also there seems different settings for manuals and autos, engine was built as an auto but is now a manual, I guess that is for the kick down or should I still set as if an auto?
only details I have for the donor car is it was a 1979/80 FSJ auto.
-
10 rings a bell set as if it was for manual most setting for auto are on the carb kickdown and higher tickover stuff
-
ta
-
its cheese again
-
hit a small problem, its run out of petrol, sort of stops you doing the timing :lol_hitting:
cant be arsed to walk to petrol station and Tans taken the trundle bus for a day at her m8s house so in my usuale way I created half a dozen unnecessary jobs :003: like clock the dizzy so vacuum don't his water pipe while tuning, removed and cleaned thermostat housing (that did need doing as was a small leak on that) and generally tided and rerouted stuff under the bonnet.
-
done the timing :headbanger: and it sounds SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
100_1630.MOV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8LRWlaXm6A#normal)
even got some flamage, btw the camera moving is the vibrations from the engine as camera was sat on a wheely bin
-
you got a chav tripod then :hysterical:
-
you got a chav tripod then :hysterical:
thought that was a pile of special brew cans

that's when they're in the shopping trolley.
Nice sound, what are you doing with the silencers ? straight through or a partial silencer
-

next after the rad on my shoping list are these (http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=20&plID=811&partID=6484) until then Bubba has lent me a set of the same
-
collected the rebuilt radiator this morning, rad alone holds allmost 10lts

all fitted now and so far only one leaky hose that has now been fixed
got m8s workshop tomorrow so should be able to get the rest of the odds and sods fitted ready for a MOT next week :003:
-
Nice work

got a bit done today, fitted fenderwells, bleed power steering, sorted indicators and fitted new rear lights (bulbs kept falling out of old lights), mounted the centre consol and fitted one wing. did have one problem, off side header gasket has blown probably because I ran the engine with 2 bolts missing

have had an idea for a side mounted receiver which will double as a step to get in, and before the jokes start yea I know I got short legs

-
Side exhaust is ace!!!
-
that or stacks up the back of the cab
-
stacks could be in the picture for the welsh one :003:
-
yes same here
-
are those side steps spring loaded ?
-
are those side steps spring loaded ?
sort of, cam type thingy, spring holds up or down
-
where did you find them
-
curious as well as Owen needs a step to get in the jeep
-
got mine on ebay for a tenner second hand, they are available new (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LUND-USA-2-inch-Receiver-Hitch-Step-for-Easy-Access_W0QQitemZ250568972482QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3a571318c2)
-
MOT booked for monday :003:
managed to replace blown manifold gasket so exhaust now finished just a few snag jobs to do this weekend
- Fit O/S Fender
- Horn (steal back from Dan)
- Secure Passenger Seat
- Rear Seat Belts (steal back from Dan)
- Adjust Mixture
- Tighten Fuel Tank Jubilee Clip
-
Fuckin weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fuckin gaskets!!!!!!!!!!!
and fuckin tyre carriers!!!!!!!!!!!
-
aha, normal jeep language has resumed :iagree:
was beginning to wonder if u were somehow blessed as we kept gettin one positive report after another :003:
-
yea was getting too good to be true
O/S manifold looks like it may have a small twist in it as its blown the front port again while I was setting the mixture, to make it worse I have allready fitted the fender (which now has to come off again) and then to top it off it started raining so I reversed the CJ back into its parking space in front of the side workshop forgetting I had the tailgate open and the tyre carrier out, result tyre carrier through the workshop door :011:
-
nahh it the shit oem style gaskets you are using tatt
-
maybe but don't think the gasket put the hole in workshop door :hysterical: that was the prat behind the wheel
-

sorry :hysterical:
-
not an MOT job and tbh only did it cos I could while sat in the car in the dry but now have sounds :003:
-
OK as expected it failed on the exhaust as didn't get time to do em, and have now ordered some better gaskets that should be here by Wednesday, a bit unexpected was it failing on noisy front wheel bearings but then again it has been stood a fair while and for some reason the break lights stopped working, was fine yesterday but decided to fail for the test. only other thing i need to look at is the ball joint on the drag link
-
with the usual perfect timing the parts arrive the same time as the rain, just in case anyone wondered what a 63 quid set of gaskets looked like

they are shinny though :003:
-
ooooh v shiny, so shiny ya gonna need shades fittin them :greggmo:
if ya like shiny, i got lots of 360 shiny chrome stuff :jpshakehead: im hopin to find someone that will love it and take it home in xchange for oodles of cash
-
my luck may be changing back :003: just got call from m8, I can use his workshop from 5 tonight till mid day tomorrow, that should see the the gaskets changed and wheel bearings sorted :icon_biggrin:
-
wheel bearings done, one side seemed to be using a grease/mud mix, luckily I did have one set of bearings so new fitted on that side the other cleaned, re-greased and adjusted.

as for the exhaust, def needed doing as both sides were blowing, near side no prob fitted and sealed, off side has issues, did fit the copper gasket but still blowing so inspected with wheel and fender off and have found the problem, the down pipe is fouling on the chassis rail before the the flange can seal. have a plan for some cutting and welding tomorrow that should sort it.
time for a bit of rest finnished at 11 and aiming to start tomorrow early
-
exhaust sorted, ended up cutting off the flange and re welding it at a different angle, down pipe now clears chassis rail, but as is usual in my life I missed one thing on the fail list, nothing major just a steering drag link ball joint now ordered from Lighthouse should be here in time to be fitted for retest Friday, all being well I'll be taking part in the punch challenge at Compton this Sunday :003:
-
bloody ell you even have ghay bling gaskets whatever next, wheel bearings and a towel rail
-
them gaskets are sweet
-
2nd in a month, another MOT passed :icon_super: :icon_super:
not perfect, still a small exhaust blow and a few non MOT niggles to sort like the auto choke and idle speed but now def going to be at Breakout in a real Jeep :003:
-
Go away :010:
-
Just had a txt to say the chief is up & running again, so now im in a far happier and generous mood, so congrats dood, im very happy for u & ya V8 :icon_super:
-
how long till the chief is on the road m8?
-
the chief is all motd and good to go, all stock for the time being tho, was just teh fuel pump that had gone wonky but that is sorted
-
why did you not fix this simple problem
-
too busy at works Pops earning money so i could get someone else to do it, im keepin the motor industry in kent alive on my own :003:
-
they pay you far too much
-
never enuff dood, altho, for what i actually do u maybe right :003:
keeps me in manicures anyway :greddy2smiley:
-
that's it the last of the must do's are done :003: oil change with new K&N oil filter with a bit of Wynn's chucked in for luck.
3 wanna do's left but can live without if I have to are a reface of the offside manifold (center ports), a manual choke conversion and a new air filter housing but whatever happens will be at breakout :icon_super:
-
sorry dood, just finished the great sort out and nowt doin on the housin, gonna need one myself for the J20 when it gets put back 2gether
