Have a word with citizens advice and trading standards... not sure, but you may have more rights than you think with the new axle being "Unfit for purpose" and all that.....

Did you pay by credit card? if so. you may be able to reclaim your money from them and make the salvage place pick up the part... :)

Anything free is worth trying.

Well what im gonna do is run her for th min, as little as possible, find some sort of replacement, and get Hills to pick the old one up on the day the new one arrives. Which is where you guys come in!
After all is said and done I have £528 to spend, and I know you guys mentioned stuff on 4wd.com and a frew other sites. I could look round sites all day long and not know what im looking for as far as diff gear stuff goes. So I was hoping that maybe you one of you guys could point me in the direction of £528 worth stuff to sort of the 35 problem or the like, as I know just a little more about diffs than a hampster knows about diffs. :D

So if anything exsits for £528ish that can help me out, well point the way fellas. Cheers all :smt023

well dont worry about fitting costs, there are enough of us here who know how to spanner to get it fitted, if you were closer to me you could put it in our barn while we fix it.
Not up on dana axles that much, and I doubt a landy sailsbury would fit

Ring & Pinion.  The two gears in ya diff.  The 'NEW' axle will have them in, so shouldn't need any.

Not sure if that kit will fit, but if it don't they probably make one that does

Post by: monkeybiz on September 20, 2005, 08:02:55 PM
owen, why after destroying 2 d35's are you going to plow money into another one???
YOU CANNOT POLISH A TURD!!!!
PISSING AGAINST THE WIND!!!!
and many other sayings fit the bill
for about £900 i could build you a ford 8.8
or about £2000 a new strengthened one from the states
£1500 for a pair of d44's with high steer on the front one
the list is endless.
you drive the grand hard offroad and the D35 cant keep p with your demands

D35's are crap end of story
Title:
Post by: chrisjones on September 20, 2005, 08:29:43 PM
I did say about the Ford 8.8's after the last blown diff but £2000 was a bit steep.  £900 sounds good though SJ.
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 20, 2005, 08:49:59 PM
Could be a bit over my budget mate, anyway whats a ford 8.8  :-k
Title:
Post by: monkeybiz on September 20, 2005, 09:03:16 PM
a rather bullit proof rear axle now fitted to ford excursions expeditions and exploders

8.8 = 8.8" rp housing

asuming i can get a explorer axle cheap enough 8 hours conversion work to the axle and its a complete bolt on to the grand. or i could get the conversion parts sent over from the states find your own axle and a good welder and you are sorted
Title:
Post by: monkeybiz on September 20, 2005, 09:06:15 PM
the other option is a yota rear axle indistructable but you would need to regear to 4.56 or 4.88 as thats what the yota are
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 21, 2005, 08:03:51 AM
Yota? Oh Toyota, i getcha! Is that sort of thing within my budget?
Title:
Post by: monkeybiz on September 21, 2005, 08:55:02 AM
dunno......... need to explore more

but the 8.8 should be within the budget as long as you can get the axle
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 21, 2005, 01:03:23 PM
Thats the thing! Cant realy stray far from my budget. But your right about not getting a 3rd 35, would be a waste CANT POLLISH A TURD!
I like that!

You thought about going into politics???

Can you fit "Chieften" or "Warrior" axles to his Jeep?

Seriously, I am not sure if these people will ship, but there's a "Drum to Drum" axle at the bottom for $400

Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 21, 2005, 09:04:44 PM
What do you recon on this?

ZJ D35

New Ring and Pinion
New Carrier and Pinion Bearings
New Pinion Seal
New Axle Bearings and Seals
Fitted, set-up and filled with Fully Synth LSD Oil

£365 + VAT

If the Limited Slip is Fubar     - New Trac Loc - Add £180 + VAT
If you want to upgrade            - New Tru Trac - Add £270 + VAT
Heavy Duty Axle Shafts           - Chromoly - Add £200 + VAT

If I had this done would I just blow it again?? Or do you think the Trac options would make it more durable and stronger?? :smt102
Title:
Post by: alcoholicmaggot on September 21, 2005, 09:16:10 PM
for that sort of money it would be easier to buy a cherry and pick up an axle later on

just my opinion.........

YOU CANNOT POLISH A TURD!!!!

Taken from the 1983 cult film Christine :supz:  :supz:.  I do believe.
Title:
Post by: monkeybiz on September 21, 2005, 09:34:17 PM
mark you are correct
the bronco 8.8 is a six stud and wont fit as its toi narrow. the explorer 8.8 os only 1.5" narrower than a d35 and is an easy fit and the cherry wheels fit.
dont wast your money on another d35
axle shipping from the states is about $500 so take that into account plus the $300 for the conversion kit to fit the axle on
Title:
Post by: Woody on September 21, 2005, 09:34:38 PM
Owen

if it is the LSD you keep blowing then the Truetrac upgrade would be well worth it.  I have them from & back in the TJ and great offroad you don't even need to think about when to use your lockers. At JF I sailed up and over climbs that a Rubicon TJ struggled to make, all that with a passenger who had some medical complaint that meant I couldn't shake or bounce the car too much so we crawled it rather than booted it.

As to their strength they certainly look far more substantial than an LSD so it may take even you a while to break one :D

Post by: shep on September 21, 2005, 09:40:31 PM
with the cost of the work and the extra bits say the shafts and a Tru Trac,
that 8.8 of Scotjeeps looks a very good option from where i'm sitting

yes if you had the work done it should be tough but if you put a 8.8 in it would be bullet proof

i would being saving the pennies for the ford option
if you spent the cash on the 35 and it did go bang again you would be kicking yourself
Title:
Post by: shep on September 21, 2005, 09:44:37 PM
as woody said the tru tracs are a great bit of kit
got them front and rear as well, love them

you just need to weigh up the cost of both options
Title:

both options will give you a solution to your problem it is downt to chioce

Post by: Anonymous on September 21, 2005, 11:08:32 PM
Checked out some US stuff too recckon the 8.8 explorer route may be the way to go

Are they the same as UK explorers- presume so so there's the scrapyard option to cut costs
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 22, 2005, 09:29:56 AM
Basicly I think Im fucked! £528 is my limit, and I only get that when I sent the knackeded diff back as a whole unit! Aint got a penny more than that. Most of the other options I seen would cost more, or need the use of the old diff housing which has to go back! :(
Guys, I just dunno what to do for the best   :smt102

So whats the dif between a ZJ diesel diff and a ZJ petrol diff? DO the petrols have 35,s in them as well?

The only difference (as far as I know) is the ring and pinion gearing.

Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 22, 2005, 12:00:36 PM
Right have spend the last few hours trying to find a garage that will look at it! Here in MiltonKeynes the garages look at my ZJ and say "What is that then?" and the amount of places that said, "Sorry we dont do rear diffs"  but have found a place whp will open up the diff and tell me what is going in in there

If I only knew more about this kinda thing I probably could have been on my way to sorting it out :banghead:

Emily sudgested that If I need a replacement part in the diff and not the whole thing the firm who sold it to me might be willing to help pay towards it as it may save them a few quid in refund and collection! :D

With going to EDM on Monday, and then Cowleys on Tuesday I may have a diagnosis on Wednesday and go from there fingers crossed!  This lunchtime I had to take ZJ to work as Em needed her car,  the front diff started making that grindy coggy sound when turning and drive was slightly intermitant!  Could this be the begining of the worst case scenario?

Bugger... Just cleaned out the rear brakes on the TJ and there is a stain on the bottom of the rear diff :( looks like the propshaft leaking a tiny but... not dripping yet. Well, when I say it's not dripping, I just pulled half a ton of mud off the bottom of it so I don't THINK it's dripping....

Do I get it sorted (Is it easy) or do I just keep an eye on the level and top it up as needed ???

Apart from that, looks okay... the tranny guard has a few more scrapes, the rear diff has a few more along with the tank guard....

Next time I play I think I'm gonner need new rear shoes though as it's taking longer and longer to adjust them up...

Had to use my little pump washer to clean them as well :( 'kin hosepipe ban is here till Feb at least

Just off out to buy some "Kate Moss is incandesant" t-shirts... Or was it innocent... :)

NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :smt022

3 mins till end of auction, had talked to Gwyn at Mountain Jacks to
confirm the diff would fit, jobs a good one, ready to put my bid in thinking about that bomb proof diff on going on my ZJ, just about to make my move, and in walks my German Boss, for one of his unanounced poke around my office and warehouse visits!
What could I do! I couldnt carry on as my PC as its in plain view, so I minimised the window preying that he would go for a leak or somthing, maybe get himself a coffe, or maybe have an embolism, anything just LEAVE ME ALONE FOR THE NEXT 3 MINS ADOLF!
He asked to my spread sheets for the good in forcasts! At that point I knew it was over, and I wouldnt get back to it in time! Oh the horror!
Although my plan was foiled by the Germans, cheers Gwyn for your on the spot advice, I realy appreciated it mate.

£370 for an explorer, and all I wanted was the diff :smt022

Have got to thinking about the explorer axle, would it be worth trying to find one of those in the UK instead of the ZJ one?
Would it mater from what model of explorer it came from? Auto, manuel, diesel, petrol?
Do i need the diff and axle assembly or just the diff?
How much rework would it need?

You'll probably have to regear it, it'll need the correct spring perches and shock and track bar brackets welded on, plus the plumbing for the brakes, ABS sensors (which may be a problem if you want it to work properly) and parking brake cables.

All the axles on Mahindras are dana 44's and run on leaf springs.
If you can get it modded to fit i can try and help you sort a rear disc conversion for it if you keep the original stud pattern.

We give our Mahindras major grief at our local site so i would same these are damn near bomb proof
Title:

The 5.2L and 5.9L V8 ZJs had the D44 fitted, but you're very unlikeley to find one over here. I wonder how close a TJ D44 is to fitting under a ZJ?
Basically any axle that wasn't made for a ZJ is going to need some mods to the mounting bracketry and will probably need regearing.

Thats quite nice!
Maybe the ZJ was a dog from the begining I just didnt see it.

I suppose the other option is to put the 35 in, save pennys untill after xmas and do the super 35 conversion! With no extreme frodin between times, and putting a 35 in doesnt exceed our limited budget at the min. Would love to get it sorted and bomb proofed, but just cant do it at the min. All your ideas and thoughts and more ideas on the diff have been greatly valued and appreciated by me and Em but sadly nowt comes in under budget. So if Birtys go back to Ribbo and we are there in the next 3 or 4 months DONT LET ME GO AND PLAY IN THE WOODS!

Well apart from the diff there are a few new developments! :(

The master brake cylinder has gone, pedal travels all the way to the floor and I have trouble stopping her!  And you know that noise I tould you lot about, the big ends noise that happens somtimes when she takes in a little water? Well the noise is back, and without the water intake
And i think the power steering motor has gone as the steering is hard and on its last leggs, makes that loud wooshing sound when you rev her up.

Am starting to wonder if its even worth while spending the cash to get her put right, or to sell her off as spares or repair :(

Anyone have an answer for this?

keep an eye on it, top it up if it needs it. Mine was leaking on the XJ when I first had it and then stopped of it's own accord, might have been a bit of dirt in the seal or something, I don't really know.
