when changing gear and letting out the clutch i can feal a clunk as the drive is taken up, on a 2 wheel drive car this would indicate transmisson wear, is this the same for the cherokee? is there any way of identifying which part of the transmission is warn?
also when towing our caravan i notice a clonk from the front nearside, as this occurs when in 2 wheel drive i guess that this isnt a transmission fault but a suspension problem, am i correct
thanks all

hmmm......worn universal joint on rear driveshaft maybe.....my CJ used to clunk like that......
-
if when driving in says forth gear, you take your foot of the accelerator then put your foot back on you feel a clunk as the drive is taken back up, on an ordinary 2 wheel drive car this is a sign of transmisson wear .
just wondering if this is the same on a jeep
thanks all

its i job to know without seeing it but i would expect a litle but is sounds to me like you have a streched chain in your tranfer case i am sure dr bob will be able to help as he is up to speed with later jeep products

Check for excessive backlash in the rear axle (can you turn the rear propshaft a long way before anything happens)
Check for wear in the rear prop UJs
Check the engine and transmission mounts are good
Check the exhaust isn't hitting anything
Check rear suspension fixings and bushes

thanks all for the advice, perhaps iam expecting too much, we paid 4500 for it, it has 100 thou on the clock and its on a w reg.
i think its one of the best looking cars on the road but i feel like ive been ripped off and am very p***** o**.
anyone got an omega they want to trade for a jeep
must be at least a y reg
-
its a diesel isnt it? wont be the transfer chain, more likely the UJs, dont forget 4x4's make more noise than a normal car, have you turned the rear prop by hand yet?
-
Don't lose faith yet! You'll sort it.

Hi all - re
"Check for excessive backlash in the rear axle (can you turn the rear propshaft a long way before anything happens) "
With all four wheels on the ground - i can turn the rear prop about a quarter of an inch either way before you can feel any resistance. at the front i can turn the prop twice that much either way befor i feel any resistance
i guess that the rear is about normal but is the front diff worn?
whats the best way of checking the UJs
thanks
