Title: Cheapie winches
Post by: Psychoman on July 22, 2005, 09:05:29 PM
Hi - been doing some surfing on EBay and found some cheapie winches - 9000lb pull EPS jobbies. Anyone used these? For £200 and something they seem suspiciously cheap.... :?

I just purchased a 9500 lb Loadsure winch from "ndrive" on Ebay for £279 + carriage. Looks to be good quality, has 5.5hp motor (some cheaper ones are 3.6hp) It comes with roller fairlead, remote, all cables and mounting bolts and comprehensive instructions and parts lists.
Purchased on sunday night, arrived 8.30 am Tuesday.
Haven't used it in anger yet, apart from dragging the XJ across the yard to tension the cable, but will get it's first outing tomorrow at Minestead Manor.
Will post further developments when I've used it a bit, but at that price I  had to give it a go, especially as it's bright orange. Matches my golden locks don't you know...

Cheapie wnch update..........

So far so good. Hauled myself and several other Jeeps out of some sticky situations yesterday with no probs. Motor runs nice and cool and pulls well even when the cable drum is almost full. Speed not bad either although obviously not on par with something like an 8274. Only time will tell how durable it is compared with more expensive models so will post again with further developments. Now saving for a plasma rope as I'm finding steel cable is a bit of a pain in the Cooper's.

KD. The mounting bolted straight onto the XJ using all existing holes so no drilling required. Then used the ends of my trashed front bumper to make bumperettes and a lick of fresh paint to finish the job. I am getting an 8 mm steel plate made up to reinforce the area where the winch bolts to it as it does flex to a certain degree under load, which could cause stress cracks with time. Have uploaded pics to my gallery.

Mike

I saw your winch mount at Minstead on Saturday and have been thinking about something similar for mine. Can you get me any details for it?

I'm interested in how it attaches as I was thinking of copying the Warn hidden mount but that's only rated to 8000lbs!? :smt017

James

P.S. Nice demonstration in 'the pit'.

I'm told mine was originally attached to one of the Jeep display team Cherokees, so was possibly fabricated by Surrey Off Road. It is basically a fabricated steel box, the winch bolts to the front plate, lying on it's back rather than sitting on top of a plate like on a Wrangler. The front plate is actually a little flimsy for this in my opinion so I am reinforcing it with an additional 8mm thick plate to reduce flexing.

It is bolted to the front of the Jeep with all existing points. 4 bolts through the frame rails, used for the bumper mountings, 4 bolts adjacent and at right angles to these through existing holed in the front panel, another two at the bottom of the front panel (all M10 I think) and then three smaller ones shared with the steering skid across the lower front.

This leaves you with no front bumper, I used the two ends chopped off my old bumper but will probably weld some heavy box section to either side of the winch mount to replace these eventually.

I haven't seen anything exactly like this for sale and you might be better to just get a winch bumper (Olympic do one for about $400) but if you want to get it copied I can send you some photos if you like.

Alternatively have a look at this Warn grille guard on Quadratech and winch mount if you want to keep your stock bumper.......

http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe (http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe) then search for 72115.802 in Cherokee.

Thanks Mike.

With my facelift XJ the center section is separate to the plastic corners as you probably know.

I saw this:
http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.p ... idden+warn (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59355&page=2&pp=15&highlight=hidden+warn)

and liked the look of it. But given my beginner fabrication skills it may take a while to get it right.

I'm fussy about aftermarket stuff and have only seen a couple of bumpers I'd be happy with - maybe I'll just make a whole bumper.:-k

Thanks for the info though,

James

Not sure if you've seen the MADXJ site in the US, but there is a write up in their technical section on fabricating an XJ front bumper which looked pretty reasonable (I'd put up the URL if I knew how   )

i dont think hidden winches are the best option mainly from a user piont of view. we were on a lane run not long ago when we met up with a guy in a lardy with a hidden winch, real problems the cable had bunched and torn a cable off the solonoid so it was just a total mess. i know they aint the pretyiest of things but its much better to have good acces to everythink than to end up in that sort of mess and stuck. 8)

Trouble is...show it off and get it nicked. You`re ok KD where you are but i worry about mine as there are too many little scrotes around for my liking and i`ve heard of winches getting pinched so hidden ones are good in that respect but i also agree with Greegmo in that you want to be able to get easy access to it in times of trouble :)  :)

Hmm. not bad.
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on August 03, 2005, 04:14:38 PM
My "winch type thingy" turned up today!! Ordered at 4pm yesterday, on my floor noon today!!!! Cant recommend Rebel4x4 enough!!!

I know they are primarily Landy specialists but for winches & stuff they seem very keen on price. Even PG Winches (who came highly recommended by Greggmo) couldnt get close on price!!
Title:
Post by: trent on August 03, 2005, 04:57:29 PM
Good price KD

Just out of interest, whats better and why,
The integrated solenoid bridge,  or the solenoid over the motor (at the side)?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on August 03, 2005, 05:35:07 PM
I suppose the integrated bridge solenoid is ok if you have the height for it........you wouldnt want it if you were trying to "hide" it in a bumper for example........also means you dont have to find an alternative mounting for the solenoid........dunno the difference otherwise........

What I do know is that its feckin heavy!!!!   The bridge probably makes it heavier than the other.........

Might be worth adding to the suppliers list........

Post by: Psychoman on August 03, 2005, 06:12:18 PM
Sounds good KD - any reason you went for that particular model of winch? Also found a source for "Champion" winches from the US that seem very (suspiciously?) cheap... any thoughts?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on August 03, 2005, 06:22:13 PM
I looked around for ages.......looked at champion myself as they seemed good prices, then got some feedback from Greggmo as his seems to get more use than most (hehehe) & an earlier post from Bubba seemed to rate Superwinch top, then Warn, then Ramsey..........I dont think you can beat recommendation for anything!

I reckoned that the extra 130 notes more than the one Mike bought was worth it for Superwinch............spoke to quite a few dealers too (not just superwinch dealers) & they all rated the EPi9......apparently its exactly the same as the Come-up DV9000i (best price I could find on that was £435)

I hope not to have to use it much.........

A future upgrade might be plasma rope......as I know this winch is ok with it! Something worth thinking of if you are buying a winch........

All I have to do now is get my custom bumpers fabricated..........
Title:
Post by: greggmo on August 03, 2005, 08:46:12 PM
glad ya got one sorted mate. there is not a lot of diferance in them for having a seperate solonoid other than the fitting of it to your truck. hope you ordered the spacers for your skyjackoff kit, the ones to lift the front back up when ya fit yer winch. he he he he he. oh and your heavyer bumper he he he he.
Title:
Post by: Bubba on August 03, 2005, 10:17:06 PM
i dont like itegrated selonoids in the bridge if it all goes shit shape you are stucck litraly at least whith a selonoid box you can rip the cover off and hot wire it real easy like and get yourself unstuck
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on August 04, 2005, 09:58:27 AM
Or upgrade to allbrights and not have so many solenoid problems as well....
Title:
Post by: Psychoman on August 04, 2005, 06:26:15 PM
Fair point on the price, KD - suppose if you've got the right one first time, then its cheaper long term - though I have to say as less than 300 squid for the 8000 Champion I'm more than a bit tempted. :?

Plasma is another thing entirely - lighter, safer, easier to handle. Definitely worth a look and the EP is a good winch for that given the external brake. Decisions, decisions...

Least I don't have to worry about the mounting points - Landies are a piece of cake as far as that goes! :)

Or... bring your second hand winch to Jeepfest and sell it to me!?!?
