Top Spring locators thread stripped help wanted

This is how my IRO top spring locators should bolt under the top mount for the front springs. Stops the springs shifting when the disconnects are off.
I drilled a hole and tapped the thread like they said ( and you try finding a tap for a 20tpi 1/2" bolt ) but it is only thin sheet and the thread has stripped.

How do I fix it now??

I was thinking of drilling up through the hole until I came out inside the engine bay and then enlarge the top hole with a hole cutter until big enough to pass a nut through. Then use M12 Rod with nuts on each end.

Would not be pretty but it would fix. But would it weaken the spring mount too much??

Any advice welcomed.
