TJ starter motor
« on: July 16, 2011, 09:52:34 PM »

Before you all say, use the search box, I already have.

So My Starter motor has started playing up, in that when I turn the key, nothing would happen for a bit then maybe after some time it would start the engine, I have tried fwd and backwarding the engine and it still makes no difference. So I decided to swap it out for a spare I had......Fitted the 'fresh' one (bought from a scrapper off of ebay from somewhere on wye) and derfuckingder same problem. I can hear the solenoid clickik/clunking but there's no starting.

So I popped my screw driver across the terminals and heh presto she started good as gold, she then started a few times ok with the key, then started to play up again.

I found a handy starter motor rebuild thread on here, Is that the process I need to go down, or is it something electrical, dodgy connection??
I look forward to your advice

Cheers
Willo

Sound like a doggy connection to me
Worth checking all the connection from the battery to the starter
Take them off and give them clean may be

Get a multimeter and check the positive eye in fact remove clean refit the said positive cable eye at the starter (cover with some "KY" from the crew for best results) do the same with the earth wile you are at it.

Once completed re attempt the starting process and use the meter to identify the fault - this should be logical once the connections are no longer a factor.

What Earth? As far as I could tell the earth is transmitted through the engine body when the starter motor is bolted on, thus down to chassis/-ve.

I will re-go through connections tomorrow, I checked the +ve cable to it and had 12.8V

I think the crew are fresh out of KY, I'll ask around!

Also take the battery terminals off and clean them.
