Cummins 6BT (dont dig me out, blame Jez)
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:28:11 AM »

I know even less bout diesels than I do petrol engines (yes yes, 0.1% less than fuck all etc), but as you all know and hate I dont like to stand still, so a few questions:

If I wanted to sling a cummins 5.9 into the kaiser, or any other Jeep for that matter what would I need to know?
How much better is it over the Perkins 6.354?
What would need to be done to the one below to turn it into Wildwood's promised golden Jeepin paradise?

krakerd cummins 6bta

And yes I know just drive it blah de blah  :003:  im not talkin about this year, just a long term thought

Any other views, opinions, experiences, ideas, etc ............ are warmly sought  :003: :greggmo:

I guess if a Ram can handle it.....

Will be a breeze for the M715

Then there's the German bloke you know with the Cummins in the FSJ .

but I shouldn't encourage you :icon_twisted:

Best bet is to buy a complete truck and canalize everything including the gearbox and all. the early 5.9 has minimal or no electronics so it is quite good. The late 5.9 is much more more computer dependent and don't even think of the latest 6.7 version.

See told ya BD....as Delk said get a complete truck and run its gearbox....save wads....

used to be people breaking complete vehicles or selling to 3 rd world countries so one of them would get you all the bits you need

Whats wrong with the Perkins BD? I dont think you will gain much unless you fit a reasonably modern diesel in its place

Leave the Perkins to the guys running boats. The Cummins is a great engine and has huge potential, just look up Dodge Cummins on YouTube. It is long and heavy but worth the work if it is done correctly.

As I mentioned get a complete truck, the 5.9 will eat small gearboxes and Dodge even had trouble with the manual they installed for a few years. I think they tried running a Getrag (sp) but it quickly died. The NV4500 5spd and NV5600 6sdp do really well plus the auto boxes.

got a cummins in my ram (24 valve some electronics) the older 12 valves are basic but fantastic. they sound like crap at idle but you can basicaly adjust the fueling and turbo to produce as much power as you want and it will take it(cant say the rest of the drive train will like it). your biggest problems are weight (no big deal in your truck) and getting a gearbox that will stand it, my dodge ha a nv4500 in it which is pretty stout.
these engines were fitted to daf trucks and are on ebay all the time compleate with the daf gearbox so could be an option.
if they werent so damn heavy id have one in the cj in a heartbeat.
