Will 235/70 R16's fit an XJ
« on: April 16, 2006, 02:59:17 PM »

I am looking at getting some new(er) wheels for my '99 Facelift XJ Cherokee and am quite fancying some wheels I have seen advertised on here from a ZJ Grand Cherokee Orvis ('98)

I think the stud patterns are the same, so the wheels will fit, but I'm
concerned about the overall height clearance.

I have seen mentioned that the largest recommended size for a stock XJ is
253/75 R15 which by my reckoning gives an overall height of around 28.88 inches.

The last of the XJs were fitted with 225/70 R16 as standard which gives
around 28.4 inches.

The GC wheels I'm interested in are 235/70 R16 which gives 28.95 inches
i.e bigger (albeit only slightly) than the largest usually recommended.

I'm guessing they will probably be alright, there is no visble sag from
the leafs at the back, but I don't want to be scraping the wheelarches.

Anyone tried it ?

Should be ok, 235/75 R15 is really the largest you can get away with on a stock XJ but 235/75 R16 is only going to be about an inch taller so you will probably get a little rubbing up front on full articulation and lock. You will begin to notice a slight loss of performance at this size, and make sure your speedo isn't reading under against a GPS.

Ok Thanks- Actually it's a lot less than an inch I think.

235/75 R15 = 28.88 inches
235/70 R16 = 28.95 inches

Note the '70' rather than 75 in the second measurement. Less than a 10th of an inch. Converting it all back to metric I reckon about 1mm ish.

If 235/75 R15 still leaves sufficient room I guess another mil is probably neither here nor there.

 yup, missed that, if they're 70 profile you should have no problem.
