AMC V8 alternators
« on: February 13, 2014, 01:37:03 PM »

First question is confirmation that the 4.2 and the V8 alternators are different?

I did a search on here and found some posts saying they were the same, but mine is duff and when I went to swap to one of my spares but the hole at the top where the bolt goes through is smaller than the one that came off ...... :017:

Any thoughts before I get pillaged by lightys for a new one....?

did you see the relocation I did on the 360? that could help plus keeps it out of the water.

other than that it's an easy job to extend the wires

 :timmy:

right, new alternator turned up and I had to drill that one out to fit as well - bit scary but all is good and now have a Jeep that charges the battery :icon_super:

however, probably due to me bein a lot hamfisted my incredible strength I managed to snap the bolt that goes into the bottom of the alternator through the bracket  :eusa_doh:

So, I have bodged been ingenious in the short term by puttin a nut & bolt thru the bracket itself to hold the alternator high enuff, however that does mean I have some belt squeaking, so long story short is does anyone know the size of the bolt I snapped so I can get the alternator in the right position?

Cheers

If you haven't broke the bolt in the casing then whats to stop you drilling that out and putting a long metric bolt with a nut (nyloc would be good) on the end.
Its not like the warranty will be any good now you have drilled it anyway  :icon_rolleyes:

You snapped the bolt in the old alternator and not when you were fitting the new one?....
