Imagine the alternator is actually someone you are chatting up in a bar in Thailand.

The correct size bolt(or girl) will slip in easily and tighten up nicely and will leave you feeling good with yourself.

The wrong size bolt(may not actually be a girl!) may start off feeling correct, but soon you will feel that something is not quite right and everything is too tight and somehow it not the correct fitment.
This leaves you with two choices...

1:You can back off before its too late, make your apologies and call it a day and leave the job to someone else.
2:Blindly keep going and really get yourself in a mess, OH! but by then its too late and everything is crossthreaded and cockled.
Yes you may feel less of a man, and yes you may feel the need to scrub yourself clean and pray no one finds out what you have done, but we wont think any less of you. :003:

Don't do b&q, they only do bolts made of cheese. Google fasteners companies near you, take what's left of the snapped bolt that fits and the length you need and talk to the people there. My local guy's a miserable sod but has imperial, metric, fine, coarse, all manner of washers and nuts and can normally sort my problems out.

I put my money on 3/8", with a little side bet on 7/16", as 1/2" would be just too easy!
But UNC or UNF that's a whole new thread!

5/16 UNC which is 7.93mm for visually checking (actually 7.9375mm just in case J33pKY is reading this and has his calculator at the ready :003:).
Thats what my spanking new remanufactured alternator is tapped out to anyway...

I'm sure Andrew at Lighthouse could go into more detail about the correct bolt than you dave!  You haunt given the exact length or finish in your half ass description....

Its about 1 inch in length and the one i have has a yellow passivated finish.

The bolt is also similar in both appearance and finish..........

passivated.....?

don't you mean zinc plating which technically isn't passivated since it will rust. don't forget you will need an imperial adjustable spanner to tighten the nuts
