Come on Dave keep up with the lesson

So far Bulldog has hopefully learnt:

That the item we think he needs is a 5/16 UNC x 1inch set screw.
Helicoiling can repair broken threads.
Passivating is a process to make something more corrosion resistant than standard Zinc plating.
If he is ever in Thailand to make sure that he checks the contents of the package before opening.

Todays lesson after lunch will be the correct torque setting of the set screw and setting the tension of the belt, but before that the fundamental priciple of which way to rotate the setscrew so it tightens in the first place. :003:

Its about 1 inch in length and the one i have has a yellow passivated finish.

You must have misunderstood!  I wanted to know about the bolt you were describing! Not the contents off your underpants!  ever though I believe it was Brown passivated when you left Mr iom  camper that morning.

I'm a bit worried i will have something useful pushed outa my brain if i remember any of this :umn:

I have imperial sockets,  but I think a 13 spanner fitted last time

The belt just needs to be tighter than it is but torque settings for the bolt obviously v important for a man of unfeasible strength like myself

you may have missed that part about me snapping lumps of metal in half :celebrate:

TBH not knowing when to stop tightening and then snapping is a consistent problem - one of the myriad of reasons why spanners are not my friend

Changing an alternator turns into an expensive and complicated fortnights worth of mental endurance

BD, UNC bolts and spanners with no accidents.

I never thought I would type those words in the same sentence  :icon_super:

1/2 UNC even his alternator has to have a bigger bolt holding it on.
Thats also the size of his wheel nuts and hes had plenty of practice with those :003:

Dont get accustomed to all this hardcore mechanics from me tho - once the speedo is fixed Im going back to ignoring it all  :003:

Altho I will have two more questions:

Last time I did an oil change was about 30 yrs ago - is it still appropriate to hammer a screwdriver thru the filter and use that to twist it off or has the metal in them changed to have less robustness?

And apart from bring it with me to to help the CF14 fire - what do you all do with the old oil?

I had to use the screwdriver trick to get an old oil filter off the XJ a while back, and as for old oil, I put it in a tub then hide it in the parents garage where they're unlikely to come across it for a while! :003:

oil filter straps are very cheap and your recycling centre will take your old oil, mine has a limit of 2 gal per trip so bear that in mind

Use a filter wrench (what type is down to you) The screwdriver hammered through the filter sides can end in tears when you crack the mounting .....
