As far as we can work out, it never made it over to Europe, during Overlord, as it has an NRA sticker in the windscreen.
That suggests that it spent it's retirement in the US, and no ETO equipment was returned home, so as not to kill the US's manufacturing industry after the war.

It has seen service, with the US Marine Core, judging by her hood number, but probably only within the continental USA

My guess is that she was stockpiled after manufacture, but never deployed. She was then issued to the Marine Core post WW2. Her invasion markings and original registration were painted over, and she was used on a base, somewhere in the western States, until she was sold off, in the 50's.
until the bloke who imported her answers my letter, though, it's all speculation.

The Jeep of course [emoji1]

All my trucks have names. My old XJ was Christine. The Comanche is Lindy-Lou. New XJ is Ole Unreliable. KJ is Libby. Work pickup is Yvonne. GPW is Brenda-May

She is named after my Mum ;)

A short version...

Fords went into production as "GP", with "G" for a "Government" type contract and "P" commonly used by Ford to designate any passenger car with a wheelbase of 80 in (2,032 mm), the "W" referring to the "Willys" licensed design.

short version part 2

after much thrashing about over prototype selection and testing willys were selected as winner however the army took it upon them selves to claim ownership of the specs and final design as it was all done to meet their strict criteria

they awarded the main contract to willys however felt that they would not be able to fulfil the huge orders that would be needed so awarded ford a contract also  and its fair to say ford were very proud of the version they built and put the ford script on many of the parts and bolts

i dont think there is a better version  between the two ford fittings are highly prized and the ford is statistically rarer

the most amazing part of the story has to be the fact that when first designed they were a very modern vehicle but were built for a projected 6 week to 3 month combat life thats all

You're not the GPW I've seen around Derby, are you? I've had a couple of waves from one whilst I've been in my XJ.
