Suspect noise
« on: September 10, 2008, 04:09:43 PM »

I`ve noticed a suspect `rattle` from somewhere near the bottom of my engine (at least I think its the engine, its below my footwell) in the last week or so. Most noticeably today driving 60 miles home from the airport.
I fitted new engine mounts (correct height) and a new manifold about a fortnight ago including an oil and filter change using Castrol GTX Magnatec for basic engines.
It sounds like a rattle and i`m worried it might be serious as bottom end noises are rarely good. There is no apparent `crank` type knock when starting from cold, it holds excellent oil pressure (according to the guage) and the oil on the dip looks like new.
It gets faster as I as the revs pick up. Could I have done something wrong or is it shit luck? I`m hoping theres light here as fitting new engines are outta my league.  :-?

Right ok guys , she`s off the road.

1 question. can the torque converter bolts be accessed through anywhere in the bellhousing with a socket? or is it a gearbox out job?? Is there any easy options??

I won`t be doing the job, so excuse my poor wording of the question, I`m asking for someones else.

 Any info appreciated .

Take the cover plate off the bellhousing behind the sump, you can see th eback of the flexplate and access 1 bolt at a time.

Torque converter bolts were all 100% tight and everything looked dry and in order. The rattle is intermittent and starting to burst my tits. Its not loud, like a cam rattle , but surely not from the bottom end. After taking the Jeep out for the mechanic to look at it the fucking thing was silent  but surprise surprise rattled when i got home.

Any other suggestions? I will get there.

I don’t know much about the layout ox XJs, but have you ruled out the cat? Mine started with a very slight rattle and then it became very obvious what it was.

Also, have you tried making a homemade stethoscope out of a piece of copper pipe and garden hose? This might help you pinpoint the rattle.
