Right you lot need some advice on GPS. Theres a posibility that I may be getting some sort of GPS soon, but I know dick about them! Makes, models etc! All i know is that GPS is that there is a man in a satalite who types on his keybored and sends it to your GPS to tell you where you are.
Thays right aint it?

What do you want to do with your gps?

Is it just basic a handheld system which displays your co-ordinates, direction of travel and speed?  Or do you want a full sat nav system?

Only kiddin' mate

Personally I'd go for summut like a Garmin GPSMAP 60C

It's a handheld unit with a nice big colour screen and a fair bit of memory for loading in maps.

It's designed for out in't hills, but will do route finding on the road and the best bit is; if ya use it with software like memory map, you can plot in routes straight off OS maps on ya computer.

It's not designed for sat-nav, but it's far more versitile than the likes of Tom-tom when you get off the beaten track.

Yes Stew,

We get it!!!

Mind you, I have to agree.  GPS is not a replacement for maps.  You still need to carry an OS of the area with you and know how to use it!!!

GPS is just a quicker and more intelligent form of map, but they are just as capable of leading you into danger as they are away from it.

I don't know of any gps which will accept OS maps.

The alternative (expensive) is to have a pda, eg Ipaq, bluetooth gps or similar and the Memory Map software with the relevent OS maps.

I have no experience of memory Map, but have heard favourable comments from Jeepers who use it.

The best bit about the handhelds is-

If you have Memory Map, or similar, you can sit at your PC and plot a route onto the OS map.  Simple or as complicated as you like.

You then download that info onto the GPS.  It doesn't download the map, just the route, so you need to be able to find the start point!!!  you then just follow the GPS's directions round.

The beauty of the 60cs is it has enough memory to load road maps on.  So you can use it as a standard sat-nav to get to your start point.

When you get home you can also load the data back on to your PC and show the world just exactly where you got lost!!!!!

Another benifit is if you try a lane that you spot.  once you get home you can store that route back to your mapping software for future use.

No need to go searching through your maps while your out, so you can find the place again at a later date-  or share it with the rest of us!!!!
