I reckon this is a question for Bubba!

Is the carb on a '79 CJ 4.2 any good?  Reliable?

What should I fit in it's place if not?

Before anyone says it the MPI conversion it's just too damn pricey right now.  As is a V8 conversion so I'm gonna stick with the 4.2 and make the most of it.

I'm in the process of fitting my new fuel tank and putting fuel lines in place along the frame, then I'll be ready to drop the donkey in 'er.  Can't wait to fire the beast up again!

It'll probably be a Carter 2bbl, or something similar. Bin it and get a Holley. I had a Carter in my '89 YJ and it was terrible. It hates hills, just hates them. Somehow manages to leak fuel AND suck air at the same time. Had it rebuilt too many times.

Search around on t'internet, there's plenty of write ups on swapping carter carbs.

I have a lot of 4.2 engine bits from one I bought off Bubba. It's from a later vehicle '82-'85 range I think. All the bits I have, including carb, need shifting to free up space. I don't know whether the carb is the same as described above but if you want it or anything 4.2 let me know.

Yeah it's a carter 2 barrel.  To be fair it looks a bit over complex.....I've seen less pipes on a plane fuel control unit!  I've read articles about carb swaps there's loads out there - Holly's, Webers, MC2100(???)

I just don't know which is best!

All those vacuum hoses are for the emissions. And most of the fuckers leak. Get liberal with a can of WD40 and you'll see what i mean. Seriously, get tha Webber, and goggle how to bin most of those hoses.

Hi ,i ran a weber on my 4.2 for about 2yrs it was'nt a bad swap for the carter but if you plan on wheeling it go efi  :evil: before going EFI, and can honestly say it was one of the best thing i ever did  :D its so smooth and as for fuel consuption WAY better.
Knowing what i know now i think i would  be well possible to do a efi swap on the cheap now that cherrys are so cheep 8)

i have run all the factory 4.2 and 3.8 carbs factory carbs run from bearable to complete and utter shit  the best setup was undoutedly later inlet and exhaust manifolds cuck that one peace bolted together shit in the bin james h has got one and get the corect adapter for 82/86 cj and go webber and put dui distributor in it or hei so that the ignition got enough bang to use the much more tunable webber and you will have a good smooth powerfull torky 6banger this is the setup i used on my old scrambler for 3years before v8ing it i had no probs on hills or side slopes it just worked .....and afterall thats what we all want

Any ideas as to the best place to buy the adapter plate, gaskets and linkage kit for the two barrel manifold to weber carb?

Got mine from webcom via a tuning company , sure it will be on google .
Another way to increase the spark apart from a new dissy is a nutter bypass which is how to bypass the older ignition module , another job for google , it worked a treat on my 4.2 , its just a dissy cap rotor arm coil plus bit of wiring swap.

I already have the carb kit, but it has the single barrel adapter and linkage.

I will be needing a two barrel setup soon. (He says rather optimistically)
