After Nat's mishap today,
The rear disc is in 2 halves, Do I need to replace both sides or just the damaged one?
Cheers
J
-
what happened?
-
what happened?
Keep up old chap..... Nat kissed the curb with the WJ shiny mobile today...... curb won.
Nat ok but in dog house now :003: (top tip ..... no need to be angry ...... capitalize :icon_super:)
-
You always replace in pairs.
-
A hit that hard might have done more damage, fingers crossed I'm wrong
-
:iagree: new discs and pads required, and you could have a buckled wheel now or bent shaft
-

:imwitstupid: fuck chivalry, milk it for all its worth :003:
-
Ok, so pair of disc's and pads.
Wheel still need to sort, I know Jedi's got a set but need the 3inch lift to fit them.
As Cockney Boy stated I am concerned about other damage,
What else could it have done / is there anyway to check shaft as Rob mentioned them?
-
you can always swap them over for the standard ones i have here to get you about if you want?
-
Cheers Rob, will get disc's from motorfactors in the morning then wobble over if your about.
-
i would get it jacked up and have a close look cockney had 2 bent shafts
-
How can I tell Kev?
-
jack the thing up measure everything them on four stands securely blocked and chocked spin the wheels
-
Eehhh??
So jack all 4 wheels onto stands?
The wheel is fucked so its not going to show true and straight?
I am confused
-
put on a good wheel numpty and they you should be able to see the run out.

lol,
What you up to tomorrow dude?
-
staying in the house looking out the window at you i think.
-
Yes but Jeep is an mine wonky!
So you need to come to my house and look out of my window.
-
Wooo! done that a few months ago! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Kerb 10 Jeep 0
I wrote off the wheel, split the disc and bent the half shaft :010:
I eventually sourced a new shaft and fitted new discs!! pads and shoes!
Keep in mind that the Diesel half shaft is 1" shorter than the petrol ones ( no idea why but they are!! oh and there a larger diameter too! - more torque you see! :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:)
Good luck
Dougie
-
if the shaft is bent, which is highly likely, it'll be cheaper to sling another s/h axle under it .
-
Wheel and disc off, just taking wheel to see its its bent at rim of the face.
-

I'd like to point out I think the shafts were already bent :icon_sad:
-
Wheel is usable, only the rim bent.
But Shaft is screwed!
Do I need specialist tools to replace the half shaft,
What do I need, obviously new shaft, do I need a fitting or bearing kit as well??
-
shaft if sh will come with a bearing and seal on it but i would replace with new anyways
-
Is it a drive fix or specialist tools needed?
-
If the front is anything to go by, just spannering, hubs off and all that, pry oil seal out, and it will just pull out.
Oh btw, if anybody has the need for a petrol front offside WJ halfshaft, I've got one going for free. Came with the CV joint I bought in Belgium.
Bloody petrol ones are an inch longer (as somebody else already pointed out elsewhere)
Good luck,
-
if you do fit a new bearing on the shaft a press is by far the best tool for fitting
-
Look like Jeep is going to Carlos next weekend and Me / Rob / Tank / Carlos are going to do an Axle swap.
Tank looking into borrowing a flat bed unless anyone local have a trailer we can borrow.
-
:icon_eek:
-
That does seem a lot of work for a bent shaft :017:
I'm guessing the ratio's are definatley the same ?
-
Changing the shaft over and axle is the best option Jay. Ask a certain Birty some cash and he can do that for you
-
I can see the sense, axle off carlos 175 squidsish
drive shaft, bearing kit, discs, pads etc will be way more IMHO :003:
DON'T forget the piss taking too :hysterical:

Eaxctly this, except axle was a bit cheaper off him.
I got new disc's and pads yesterday so will swap them over but motorfactors did them at trade so saved a few ££.
As you have said its the cheapest option to get it mobile again.
-
Q. If a fuse blown would you re-wire half the house ???
fit the shaft and discs from the other axle, if you don't know the history you are taking a gamble
-
and you will end up with lots of spares for next time :icon_winkle:
-
Throw yer dice!!
-
thinks its more a weather related repair and having the tools to do the job.
-
i could swap a shaft in 1/2 hour using sockets and a pair of mole grips, on the roadside if it came to it. If you want to fit a new bearing and seal then a dremel and press make it nice but can be done with a long piece of pipe and a chisel. Swapping brakes is easy and if you clamp the pipe you will need little bleeding.
Replacing an axle is a big job, by all means buy the axle as it is cheap but dont fit it all. I dont understand the logic :icon_rolleyes:

:imwitstupid: you'll also need to look at geometry if you start removing tie rods and shit

Indeed, it was bloody cold sorting the wheel out and changing disc's yesterday outside.
So what ever fix we do we will be warm!

OOOOOP's a right said Fred moment!

It's been a long day :(
-
Come on Mr Van Dyke keep up.
Must admit, I'm with Mocaj & Robsroti, buy the axle, keep what you dont need as spares. You know your diff is fine so leave it alone. No need to trailer the car either & fix can be done at a more relaxed pace nit fighting to get it done to get it home
-
most of you have never changed an axle have you? lol
-
Smost of you have never changed an axle have you? lol
Interesting thread, what would you suggest PanicMechanic :peekaboo:
-
If your just using basic hand tools, swapping the shaft is far simpler & quicker, if your using air/battery tools swap the axle! Build the new brakes up on the floor, unbolt the prop, gun the top & bottom arms disconnect the brakes & arb & drop it down on a trolley jack! As good old mister haynes says reverse the procedure!
If the "new" axle is good I know which way I would go! Just as a matter of interest if it got smacked hard enough to smash the disc & bend a half shaft has it bent the control arms or tweaked the unibody mounts?
-
seeing the disc first hand i would , i would go for an axle swap cos she may have damaged /cracked / tweaked the casing itself
-
We will have power / air tools.
New axle is lower mileage than the current one and last service on my diff there were some metal filings in there.
From what I can see everything else is straight, but Carlos will have parts on hand should be need them.
-
bloody hell she must have hit it hard, just aswell she was in a jeep.
-
Bloody hard mate, that's all I can say.
-
Jay - I'm all for collecting spares for "next time", but I'd go with the shaft swap only!
As I said above I slid into a kerb in my Wj whilst towing a Land Rover on a trailer - so it was a decent smack!! :lol_hitting:
The shaft swap is relatively easy and a damn sight quicker - as for the Uniibody/ suspension arm damage - I checked mine and no issues :icon_super:
I reckon the suspension soaked up the sway - that's what the bushes are for!
Keep in mind that if you go for the axle swap - check the ratio's!
Good luck and the sooner your on the road the better
Dougie
-
good luck with fix dood what ever route you go
