Title: '96 zj viscous coupling...
Post by: vinyljunkie72 on April 20, 2009, 08:43:17 PM
Evenin all!

i loves me grand cherry, but the front wheels are hopping and scrubbing on full lock so i suspect its the viscous coupling, but i also have a couple ball joints i need to replace first (lower offside and track bar end  ) then track the beast,i've already replaced the steering stabilizer for a pro comp and fitted a new drag link, but to be honest, i think it is the coupling. the main reason im asking is just how long do i have before it fries on me compleatly as i need to sort the cash out to replace it.... or is it better to just to go for the complete transfer box?
as i've already replaced the complete auto box a couple of years ago, how badly is this problem knackering me new box?

also, any recommendations where to get one from?
sorry about the wandering questions,  im pretty handy mechanically, but im a bit all at sea with auto boxes and the fulltime 4x4 transfer box.

thanks folks.

vinyljunkie.

Remove your front prop and eliminate this part of the drive chain...

I don't know if this is the same box as yours, but here is a link which explains how to replace a VC: http://www.masoncomputing.com/np249 (http://www.masoncomputing.com/np249" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

thanks guys, i finally replaced the ball joints and it seemed to iron out the problems,go figure, but now today after i got her back on the road, everything was fine for a while, then, well to put in an easy way, it felt like i was getting 'clutch fade' from my autobox, i'd slow down and the clutch wouldnt engage so it stalls! start her up again and everything seems fine, it seems to be intermittent. as i said i only reconned the box 2 yrs ago, so am particulaly worried as that cost me £1500! any ideas, i love my cherry, but its worryin me to death! lol.
thanks in advance!

p.s i checked the tranny fluid and its in the pink so to speak.
