just gone out to load Dans luggage into the car to take him to the bus station and the tailgate wont open, can hear the locks going on the remote and have tried the key as well but it just isn't releasing, any ideas?

Have had the same problem on my XJ, the handle wasn't contacting the latch correctly, had to open from inside, take apart, tighten some screws and lube it up and it's worked fine for about 3yrs since.

sounds about right but how do you open from the inside? can you remove the trim with the door shut?

got it fixed, waited till it wastnt looking and snuck up on it and got it open then a liberal dose of light oil and all is fine

take it as a warning and take the cover off the door and check out the lock. The XJ ones have a silly clip holding the con rod from the handle to the lock together, it starts slipping but is easily fixed with some zip ties. When it goes fully you have to butcher the inner trim panel to open the door

Also got mine stuck..................... dustsheet wedged in mechanism...................... done it 3 times now.................not too clever when the backs full of hedge cuttings and your at the tip and your can't get yer shit out
