ZJ Cills/Sills/Rocker panels
« on: April 23, 2012, 12:55:54 PM »

Bugger :ace:

Rocker panels have finally cried enough....

driver's side is rotten from half way down rear door to middle of front door...... About 32" and about 1" (at the moment)
Thought about rolling some steel to do it then realised its gonna be quicker to do 4 x4 braced at right angles with 2x2
To the unibody rails.......
like proper rock rails :icon_twisted:

MOT in a month so gotta man up for this :icon_twisted:

Amazing..... Quite happy to get down and dirty on the '1Ton' but this is a right piss off, cos tis just the tow rig.

If you're gonna put in box section sills I don't reckon you'll need to brace it back to the unibody.

My old XJ had it done (was the first on Birtys with them) and we just cut the curved outer part of the original sill away and welded (I seem to remember t'was something like 75x100) into the gap. Greggmo will probably remember the size we used.  Reasonably thick wall section meant that any load or impact was spread along the entire length to the sill so I think braces would be overkill and just add more stuff to get hung up on under the belly.

I certainly tested them and all they ever needed was more paint. The sills will still be around long after the rest of the truck has died.  :greggmo:

That seems like a hell of a lot of work just for the sake of it.

Just weld the new sills in place then there's no need to f@@K about with braces.

You'll still be able to jack of them and slide um over rocks trust me.  You just don'r need the braces if you seam weld the box in place.

Just picked up 4 metres of 100mm box in a 4mm flavour :hysterical:

Weighs a bit..... Slow journey home across the fens........ GC roof rails aren't like transit van ladder racks :jpshakehead:

Reckon  it's a one man stagger for normal blokes to lift...... Just off to cut it in two to make it easier!

When. These are on as cills will be like havin yer fat mate as a passenger the whole time :icon_super:

So.......... Tis done........ welded painted and seam welded and beautiful (in my eyes) angled and welded ends :icon_super:

Did not go to the unibody with 2 inch square section was no need :icon_biggrin: as suggested.

Just came back from MOT passed  :icon_super:

:hysterical: Guess I would be quicker  second time round

MOT man said something about 30cms of 'no rot' near seat belt mount so if like mine yours are rusted amidships by the door pilar then even tho got naff all to do with seat belt strength would have been a failure!

Yours looked OK last time I saw them??

Mind you so did mine  6 months ago :icon_twisted:

Told ya!

Well played, looks a top job. You just need to find somewhere that you can try them out properly now. Oh; and take photos.
