I knew it was too good to be true....
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:23:57 PM »

TJ was running sweet....no problems not even a grumble then.......
.....a flippen almighty skreetch! and steering heavier than a heavy thing with extra heavy weights on.

A quick look under the bonnet, and no leaks, steering fluid at correct level and all pulleys and belt OK.

It is too close to Christmas to deal with anything too expensive.

Any suggestions?
Please somebody tell me there is a kit to fix.
I know nothing about steering boxes, but think I am about to learn  :icon_sad:

It is too dark to do anything with it just now, so I am opting for beer instead.

The post is really about a steering box that just happens to be on a wrangler.
The solution if forthcoming might help others too.

Has your power steering pump seized? That would explain the screeeeetch and the heavy steering.

The noise was momentary, and happend while parking up so I had a near full lock on.
The pulley was spinning and everything looked and sounded normal when I popped the hood.
I will need to look in the daylight.

I was hoping to see something obvious, but I suppose that would be just too easy.

Check that fluid isn't contaminated is well as up to the correct level. I had some water in my fluid (oo-er). Flushed it for clean fluid, all better now.

Just found out on my CJ the pulley is a press fit on the pump shaft with no mechanical key etc. You might find if its been off before that it is now just spinning on the shaft of a seized pump. Easy check to see.

Fluid at correct level, no leaks and everything at first glance looks normal......just that I would need biceps the size of beer barrels to turn the wheel.
The noise might have been the pulley losing grip with the shaft, it is worth a check.

It is chucking it down outside so I will have to look later if the weather dries up a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Another point if you're still waiting for the rain to stop.

If a piece let go internally it could cause it to seize temporarily, then go on to mash up the rest of the pump stopping it from pumping without any outward signs of a problem.

If you take the belt off and spin the pulley by hand you should have a nice smooth resistance where it’s trying to pump fluid. If it spins freely then the internals are probably shot. If this is case and it comes to a new pump don’t forget to check up the pipes for bits of pump, or next week you’ll be looking for a new steering box.

Hope you didn't spend all your spare cash on beer last night!

Beer stocks thankfully high with enough reserve to tide me over for a while.

I will get a good look at it during the week if the rain stops.
Hopefully if it is internally in bits no bits where flung too far up the pipes.
It was a sudden complete failure so fingers crossed.

Any recomended stockist should I need to place an order?

The pump also has a tiny mesh filter inside that can get blocked up. You have to remove the fitting under the outlet hose on the pump. It is all part of the pressure releif valve assembly. It happened to me once when I changed a box. Ran fine for sometime then lost all power steering instantly.

Never know you could get lucky
