MOT passed but oil seal advisory - wj
« on: March 28, 2015, 09:56:29 PM »

My WJ CRD got through its MOT today with just a couple of advisories  :icon_super: ...rear brake pads, crack in windscreen and a weeping oil seal on rear of/s axel shaft. Does anyone know what replacing the seal entails, any specialist tools and while I'm doing it should I replace anything else (bearings maybe?). Is it a difficult task or something that a couple of hours in the drive will see done?

Thanks Daggie, can you tell if that kit includes both the inner (diff side) and outer seals?  It looks like the top left image is the diff one but I wasn't sure. From the description it doesn't say exactly but as it's the half shaft kit, I guess that kind of suggests it includes both ends.

Have you ever changed these? If so any useful pointers or tips?

Cheers

A 44 rear only has an outer seal. The bearing and retaining ring are pressed onto the shaft, you can cut the old ones off, of course, but the new ones need to be pressed back on.

Mike, isn't there a seal where the shaft comes out of the diff, or is there some special way of the oil not leaking out at the diff end and only sealing at the wheel end?

So just change the outer bearing/seal and there's no where else that the diff fluid can leak out from? I just want to make sure that I only have to take the axles out once and sort it in one go

No, Diff ends and pinion flange, thats it.before changing it I would be pulling the shaft slightly cleaning and putting back together with a little sealant if its just weeping. changing them is a straight forward enough Job if you have the gear.

Thanks for that.  I've got a couple of questions from what you've put - the diff ends, do you happen to have a link for the part, i've looked in the parts guide and struggling to find the right bit.  Second, what sealant would you use, and would you just spread it all round the outer seal, and last one, is for changing the seals/bearings, is it just the slide hammer to get the shaft out, an angle grinder to cut the bearings off and a friendly garage with a press (unless theres a clever way to do a DIY press at home?) to put the new bearings on?

Google is your friend.

The shaft and bearings are held in by four bolts. Remove the nuts and then pull or pry the shaft out. My leaks were fixed by a bit of silicone around the outside of the seal where it fits into the tube.

If you do change the seal and bearings ensure you don't damage the shaft. Usually I use a thin grinder and cut a notch in the collar and inner bearing race until you get near the shaft. After that it takes a big chisel in the notch and a hammer to crack the remainder of the material. The old collar and bearing race will drop off after that.

i would take tue shaft out and  clean it up and use some sealant its a near free fix and if it works happy days  if not then the  he seal will need replacing the downer is as said is the bearing and locking coller are destroyed to remove them  so you need a full kit

a press is by far the best and preferred way  i know others do use  an aluminium pipe to do the job  and have done this  in the past
