ZJ Gearbox

I have the chance of a '96 4.0 ZJ which has been diagnosed by the stealership as having worn epicyclic gears. The chap said it still drives and changes up and down as it should but is noisy.

Is this a common problem? The vehicle has 72K FJSH. I phoned a local transmission place and was somewhat shocked at the price of a recon. How are they to rebuild, are special tools needed?

Any ideas of the best way forward, maybe chance a used box, or should I let it go?

I'd pass on it personally. It's just another 4 litre ZJ. Maybe if it was LPG it would justify a new box.
