I saw your winch mount at Minstead on Saturday and have been thinking about something similar for mine. Can you get me any details for it?

I'm interested in how it attaches as I was thinking of copying the Warn hidden mount but that's only rated to 8000lbs!? :smt017

I'm told mine was originally attached to one of the Jeep display team Cherokees, so was possibly fabricated by Surrey Off Road. It is basically a fabricated steel box, the winch bolts to the front plate, lying on it's back rather than sitting on top of a plate like on a Wrangler. The front plate is actually a little flimsy for this in my opinion so I am reinforcing it with an additional 8mm thick plate to reduce flexing.

It is bolted to the front of the Jeep with all existing points. 4 bolts through the frame rails, used for the bumper mountings, 4 bolts adjacent and at right angles to these through existing holed in the front panel, another two at the bottom of the front panel (all M10 I think) and then three smaller ones shared with the steering skid across the lower front.

This leaves you with no front bumper, I used the two ends chopped off my old bumper but will probably weld some heavy box section to either side of the winch mount to replace these eventually.

I haven't seen anything exactly like this for sale and you might be better to just get a winch bumper (Olympic do one for about $400) but if you want to get it copied I can send you some photos if you like.

Alternatively have a look at this Warn grille guard on Quadratech and winch mount if you want to keep your stock bumper.......

With my facelift XJ the center section is separate to the plastic corners as you probably know.

and liked the look of it. But given my beginner fabrication skills it may take a while to get it right.

I'm fussy about aftermarket stuff and have only seen a couple of bumpers I'd be happy with - maybe I'll just make a whole bumper. :-k

Not sure if you've seen the MADXJ site in the US, but there is a write up in their technical section on fabricating an XJ front bumper which looked pretty reasonable (I'd put up the URL if I knew how :oops:

)

i dont think hidden winches are the best option mainly from a user piont of view. we were on a lane run not long ago when we met up with a guy in a lardy with a hidden winch, real problems the cable had bunched and torn a cable off the solonoid so it was just a total mess. i know they aint the pretyiest of things but its much better to have good acces to everythink than to end up in that sort of mess and stuck.

Trouble is...show it off and get it nicked.You`re ok KD where you are but i worry about mine as there are too many little scrotes around for my liking and i`ve heard of winches getting pinched so hidden ones are good in that respect but i also agree with Greegmo in that you want to be able to get easy access to it in times of trouble
