Title: What specification suspension bolts do I need WJ suspension ?
Post by: macabethiele on May 02, 2017, 06:09:35 PM
I need to replace the front upper suspension arm bolts on my WJ series Jeep when I fit new upper bushes etc. The jEEP dealer no longer supplies these items as they are no longer listed.

The bolts are M10 about 80-90 mm long with an unthreaded shoulder section of about 50 mm.

What specification do I need is 8.8 high tensile okay ?

parts catalogue says they are M14x2.00x105 for the axle end and M14x2.00x114 for the body end, same for front and rear axles.

Parts catalogue shows lower bolts as M14.

Front upper bolts are M10 x 1.5mm thread. Axle end is specced as 70mm long, frame end as 81mm long.

The OEM bolts will be be at least Class 9.8 but probably 10.9.

2 each of 70mm and 80mm bolts would be less that £8 posted from https://www.margnor.co.uk/bolts/10-9bolts/metric-iso/m10
-they are closed though till the start of next week it says on the website.

Found some on ebay that would be about the same cost but finer thread pitch...

or just over £9 for two of each in 1.5mm thread pitch from this seller...

Sorry for the wrong info, shouldn't write posts at 1.45am! I'm thinking of changing the bushes on mine and am wondering now why you need new bolts? have done the rears and they came out no problem. Did they get rusted into the bushes?

You are probably thinking of the lower arm bolts.

I am just playing safe in case the bolts are rusted in or thread damaged when removing them. Trouble with some of the internet bolts is the shoulder might not be long enough.
If shoulder is too long I can just run a die down so that the rubbers are located properly particularly in the lower bush that has a larger hole and has what looks like three  rivet heads at each end.

before I tried unbolting the rears I cleaned the bit of thread sticking out really well with various wire brushes in a cordless drill, then soaked them with 50/50 mix of acetone/atf. the front uppers being M10 fine pitch thread bolts I would probably try some heat on them as well.

The stock M10 x 1.5mm thread is metric course. Heat works well if needed. Sometimes trying to tighten a fastener slightly before removal can help break free seized threads.
