XJ Stuck Tie Rod
« on: April 28, 2017, 04:30:02 PM »

I tried getting an alignment done on the XJ today, but they reckoned they couldn't get the tie rod to come undone.
I'm now at home trying to free it up myself, and I'm not having much luck either.

The collars at each end came off fine, but I can't for the life of me get either of the tie rod ends to rotate within the tube.
Does anyone have any ideas how I could free this up?

I've use both methods...and even a combination of both...one way or the other resulted in a fix.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I did ask the place that did the alignment to try heating it, but they reckon it's likely to break if they do that. Is that something I need to be careful of, or are they just being over cuatious?

Haha, I didn't think it would be as easily damaged as they said.

Anyway, I've had some progress this morning. I popped the driver's side tie rod end out of the knuckle, which allowed me to get enough leverage on it that I managed to unscrew the whole tie rod from the left side tie rod end (where it connects to the drag link).

This means that I've now got the whole tie rod plus driver's side tie rod end removed as one assembly. The trouble I'm now having is that I can't free the driver's side tie rod end from the tie rod itself. I've just replaced this exact part on the ZJ which went completely smoothly - any tips on how to free this up, or is heat still the answer!?

Ahh, heat is a magical thing. It turns out that my neighbour/landlord had a blow torch, which made light work of getting this out. That's my first time using heat, but now I think I'm a convert!  :003: :icon_super:

Heat is always a friend Bryn, get yourself a small blowtorch as said above, always handy in the kitchen too for browning stuff off.

Maybe I could use that as an argument to get Emily to buy one!

Sorry, I'm confused. Why would Emily be under Bryn's truck?
