Title: TJ 4.0 1997 Wrangler replacement engine, Cherokee etc?
Post by: Green Jeep on November 15, 2012, 04:55:36 PM
What mods do I need to do to fit a Cherokee/ Grand Cherokee engine into a TJ?

I have a possible lifter and big end noise on a TJ, 127,000 miles, might strip it down and go from there...

If anyone has a spare engine, please PM or post up.

Thanks in advance Matthew

I used a 2002 tj block and an early Cherokee head for my stroker. Only real mod was to drill and tap a few mounting holes on the lower right side of the block for my alternator and ac brackets. The raised casting bits were still there but not threaded.

Later heads 1999? plus with the coil over plug packs have a slightly different head with smaller exhaust ports.

A 97-99 XJ or ZG motor is a straight swap as long as you use all your TJ ancillaries.
