Title: Suggestions to make Birty's forum more betterer
Post by: birty on March 06, 2008, 10:14:57 AM
Nobody's perfect, but we know that, so please use this thread to air your opinions, grievances and suggestions on how we, the administrators and moderators can make your stay here better.

This is especially relevant to newbies - please tell us what you think - what works and what doesn't. I'll make this a sticky so that it's always near the top.

Just noticed something that might help with the issue of new members not posting an intro first.

The forum layout has the events forum section first followed by tech forum , then Birty's forum etc. As the 'Forum Admin - Read here first!' is halfway down the page, would moving this section to the top of the page encourage new members to read this before doing anything else.

Hopefully then their first post would not be a tech issue as is commonly the case. Might keep everyone happy

Post by: tim_aka_tim on May 23, 2008, 05:06:47 PM
We've looked at creating a Frappr map before, and it's easy enough, but the take up, even on very large sites is so small that it's not really worth the effort.

The problem is that to create a flag on the map, the user must have a login to Frappr, and most people cannot be bothered.

Reorganise the registration process so that the first introduction post is mandatory with a few relavent tips on what to include, thereafter the new member can post away as usual and we get to know who, what and where they are (sorta thingy)!

Post by: greggmo on May 31, 2008, 11:30:20 PM
we did say about that but it is a bit harsh really. it is very annoying when folk just appear and the first thing they do is demand answers to their problems without even saying hi to everyone here. it is impolite in my book but it just seems like the way these days. manners are not on the gcse list i guess.

How about, instead of waiting for new members to say hi as lots just dont bother,as soon as someone registers,an automatic post is placed in Introductions with their name and an "Hello and welcome" from Birty.....??????
Title:
Post by: eastryjeep on August 02, 2008, 06:10:52 PM
Aint that kinda like a 'self licking lollipop'? We'll all be sayin 'Howdy do, etc' and the new member may not even know a post was automaticly started for them.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but we need to find a way to get the new member to look at their auto-generated post to see we aren't all that bad and how welcome they are.

Not really, and to be honest its not just for the new member, its also to introduce others to the new member and kind of breaks the ice.Whether or not the new member actually reads it or passes comment is down to them as we all have the freedom of speech thing, but i feel it might make new members feel more welcome to the club as a whole as when you first join a club you can often feel like you are not yet a part of that club when it comes to writing posts and so this way should make them more inclined to actually make a posting rather than just watching from the sidelines. Its a way of encouraging new member interaction in my opinion

I've used this site a few times http://http://cjoffroad.com/CJInfo.asp dont know if we could do something like this and maybe cover a few other models?

another thing i would like to see is the club logo used a bit more if pos, maybe even a downloadable version so we gan get our own graffics made.

Title:

sorry, back on the same topic but different method, sorta nicking this idea via jeepforum where they have one for just pics of the almighty and all conquering CJ, but how about a sticky of just members jeeps?

I know we have the members rides section but that takes a lot of clicking, i would like something where i can just scroll through and have a look, ideally with no comments allowed, just pics with a brief blurb on what they done. Im assuming a tec head administrator could lift the photos out of the members rides section, or we could just start afresh.

what you think Birty?

Nothing stopping you from creating a thread either in here of members rides for that exact purpose. If you create it, I'll make it sticky. Then if the rest of the membership likes the idea, they'll add to the thread.

Title:
Post by: tim_aka_tim on February 10, 2009, 07:21:54 PM
We can do it by giving each vehicle a new forum, eg "Grand Cherokee" "Cherokee" "CJ" "Wrangler" etc, but while that's fine for most of us, Noobs will post their liberty questions in Cherokee, cus they think they have a cherokee. We could end up with a massive list of vehicles, so we need to be careful selecting titles.

We could do sub-forums, but that requires a very large mod that would take hours to install. Going to phpbb3 would fix this.
Title:
Post by: Bubba on February 10, 2009, 07:29:09 PM
i do agree but are we going to end up with an endless hap hazard mine field as time goes on i mean i dont mind coz i know wher to find most things
Title:
Post by: Nosebolt on February 10, 2009, 07:35:10 PM
Assuming this is an exercise to improve browsing for tech info, why not divide by landmark years, ’86 seems to be a year of major changes and then the legislative changes in 2001 so maybe have;

Upto 1986
1987 to 2000
2001 on

Others who know the marques history better could maybe suggest a different time sets, but I think it would group like type technologies and be clear for newbie’s as to where to post.
Title:
Post by: tim_aka_tim on February 10, 2009, 07:38:29 PM
Well I'm all for it, so lets get the ball rolling.

We need as few extra forums as possible, whilst maintaining usability, so something like

Grand Cherokee (1993 - present)
Cherokee (1984-2001 only)
Wrangler (1987 - present)
CJ (all types to 1986)
Any Jeep not above

Title:
Post by: tim_aka_tim on February 10, 2009, 07:43:34 PM
I think that if we divided by year, we'd end up with three messes instead of one.

Question sounds familiar :  :-)

Something like this then ?

CJ (Civilan Jeep) Technical Forum
The "Classic" CJ models from 1942 till 1986

Wrangler Forum Group
For the 3 Wrangler generations. YJ (1987-1995), TJ & LJ (1997-2006), JK (2007-present)

Cherokee & Comanche Forum Group
For both the Cherokee XJ (1984-2001) and the Comanche MJ (1986-1992)

Grand Cherokee & Commander Forum Group
For the Grand Cherokee ZJ (1993 - 1998), WJ (1999-2004), WK (2005 - present) and Commander XK (2005 - present)

Liberty (KJ) Technial Forum
For the Liberty (outside USA known as Cherokee) registered starting 2002

Compass & Patriot (MK) Technical Forum
For the Compass and the Patriot (MK), 2007 till the present (based on the Dodge Caliber)

Full Size Jeep Technical Forum
For the Cherokee (SJ): 1974-1983; Wagoneer (SJ): 1963-1983; Grand Wagoneer (SJ): 1984-1991; Gladiator en J-series pickup: 1963-1987

Military Jeep Group
For the military models

Interesting thought, though the fixed windscreen forum would be a mess, and noobs might not know what the hell we're on about.

We try to be as friendly as possible, which means an easy to use forum. Having forums labelled the same as the badge on your car is probably friendliest.

Title:
Post by: tim_aka_tim on February 10, 2009, 08:01:04 PM
We could do a massive list of vehicles, but the more frangmented it gets, the less chance of people in the know reading and answering the problem.

When your forum has 20000 members, it may not be an issue as loads of expert will read each forum, but on here, the far fewer experts may take to only reading the forum that they're interested in, thus skipping questions they may well know the answers to.

I know its nowt to do with me but upgrading to phpBB3 is the first thing to do. That enables sub forums to be created easily and means the forum coding is more secure.

Tim's job keeping the site running will be made much easier. Add to that. it offers us as users far more flexibility with regard to keeping track of new posts. Cookie sessions and all that.

phpBB3 also does several things better than phpBB2, a good example is the email addresses of users are kept encrypted unlike the phpbb2 version. Creating permanent external links is also possible direct from the forum itself. Updating is much easier too.

Sorry I'm waffling on. Suffice to say upgrade to phpBB3. Its good  8-)

Title: Re: Suggestions to make Birty's forum more betterer

There's a lot of overlap in the tech issues of YJ, XJ, TJ, ZJ/G, WJ/G - engines, axles, gearboxes, wheels / tyres, brakes etc. Doesn't splitting the forums actually make it more tricky to find or help with issues??

Just my initial thought on the divided tech forums, maybe I'll get used to it

bulk moving is easy in phpbb3, just delete the forum and the option appears to move all posts to a new forum

Why is it on most forums, the next topic link is at the top of the page

It should be below / next to the last entry, instead of needing to scroll to the top of the page (I know pressing the 'home' button makes it quicker).  It would be better if I could save time and move straight onto the next post.

Removing the ability to open a new window on a link was done to make phpbb3 standards compliant. However, I've changed a few files to make it take it's old behaviour.
It works fine on new posts, but any posts done before today may open a new window.

When Birty makes a decision, it's in the best interests of the club. Birty is not one person, but many people who make collective decisions.

As for soapbox, I can understand that users liked it, and on the whole, it was fun. However, Birty doesn't just think about fun.
Birty needs to think about things such as whether something is technically easy to do, whether something will bring the club into disrepute and
also whether something would promote questionable viewpoints being aired, e.g. racism/sexism.

You are encouraged to air your views, but let's keep them legally and morally acceptable.

with u on 3 of them Bubba, but religion !!! the whole point of religion is its MADE UP, NO PROOF, REQUIRES FAITH, so rippin the mentally gullible can only help improve their faith, so it would be an act of charity to help them out

but was a good job u pulled the soapbox, coz i been workin my way up to to a rant on the roots of all evil - religions !!!

Im stuck in between really, i dont think the soapbox did any harm, in fact, had it not been there when i first came to Birties then i may have cleared off after a short while, but the box gave me an area to rant bout summink, and for folk to explain why it happened, so issue sorted, but i prefer havin birties without a soapbox than no birties at all. I honestly think we can over worry what someone outside is gonna say about a rant, and we all know that if anyone treads over the line on racism for instance, we as a group pull them up quick anyway, but there are so many fuckin idiots around who knows what they are gonna complain about?

so, after all that blah blah, i would like it back, but understand why its gone and can live without it. I do think if we could lock it to registered users only, that would solve half the worry.

some folk use religion, some use drugs, beer, smoke, whatever yer choice. some use meditation and some just go mad but its all up to the individual if you are lucky enough to have a choice.

It's a good idea, but our software doesn't support that. I'll look for a mod, but don't hold your breath.
