Steering the pig!
« on: January 19, 2011, 01:09:57 PM »

After the event i now know the answer......... :icon_biggrin:

But at the time even with pics sent to people who should have known Stateside .....no one  :jpshakehead:did

This might help TJ owners with lift or then again it might not.....

Here we go....... Left hand drive YJ with 4.5 inch lift and terraflex crossover steering with dana 60 rod ends.....lovely but can't now get full lock ???

played around for 2 years and then cos of weight of winch (8274) on front got death wobble..... went back to old system and huge damper and moved winch back 2 inches and OK.......

Now its all gone to  a mate and I'm juggling the Dana 60 parts.... I have  just got some parts for the 1 ton dana 60.... cross over steering rod ends weld in bungs etc and the guy said....... and you'll be wanting a ZJ pitman arm (bored for Dana 60 drag link) to get full lock..............

Its gona help me now but wish I'd known earlier :jpshakehead:

Same profile but just over 1 inch longer so it's going to make a difference.......... to the  steering lock.............

might be of use to someone............. if not ........ its back on my head ..........

Word of caution .....if you can't get full lock you wont break your UJs....... like I did at CF with the factory parts and NO........ steering stops :jpshakehead: dumb hippie :icon_twisted:

For the mafia I tried so many so called fixes but the steering was never right - even Gasser spent some time modifying it but alas it never worked correctly in my opinion - since the Buggy and the hydro I would go this route first time every time.

You could choose to ignore the wisdom I have shared with you and go through the VERY expensive learning curve I experianced - the choice as they say is yours!!!!

Better to spend the moooolar on something that does work.

Ar ha! So Gasser hydro assist was a failure............. ? What bits were wrong......... linkages or pump...........or ram ?

Agree PSC full hydro  is the bollix......... cos they researched it...........

I know Double J had PSC valve and bits and it worked ...3.5 turns lock to lock............. and a bit of feedback and centred..........

King CJ (been in it so have experienced it!) has a system that is very powerful.......cos its off a combine harvester! :jpshakehead:

Lock to lock in 1 turn ...yes ONE turn....... but it has eaten 3 pumps.......... surprise :icon_biggrin:

Let me make this easy.....

Hydro assist is shit and why do half a job!!!!!!

Uprated steering pump, steering box and drop arm are a waste of time plus a waste of moooolar - and yes it's shit!!!!!

Changing the geometry and x-over does not give you what you need other than the turning circle of the QE2 and yes it's shit!!!!!

Buy quality parts and change the filter and oil as required.

some fair points the IOM but the choice is there for a fully road legal(ish) vehicle or a permenant offroad toy due to full hydro steering

Yup. deffo trailer job now....... due to  tyre coverage and no e-brake...all else ok.  Would still pass MOT with those 2 items fixed :icon_super:

But as someone said to me ..."If you've ponied up for those expensive tyres the last thing you gonna do is wear them out up and down motorways to get to events"

Fair point :icon_twisted:
