Hi All,

first post so be gentle although i have been hanging around reading for the past 6 months...

Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD Limited 95 N

86000 on the clock.

Its been fantastic since i got it six months ago and I have loved every minute of being in it, unril last wednesday. It failed to start and then when it did it felt like it was running on 2 cylindrs and there was an almighty knocking noise coming from the engine. Haven't had it checked at a garage yet but my suspicions are:

Big end:  :cry:  see above (?)
o-ring gone:  :cry:  

Anybody had experience with this and can give me rough repair costs?
My worst fear are it needs a new engine which will definately be uneconomical... (I bought it for 2k 6 months ago) if its going to cost the same to repair then its a no-go...
I've been quoted 500-750 for a second hand engine but there is no gaurantees that it wouldn't develop the same fault.

In the spirit of full disclosure I have been running her on blended <ahem> biofuel at about 60:40 oil:derv.

there were no warning signs... she was perfectly fine on tuesday evening when I parked her up and then wham...

Appreciate any help/guidance you guys can be...

Injectors. Need overhaul due to vegetable oil.

I think this is one for Dr Mike........ :shock:

If it were mine and I had little knowledge of it, I would be tempted to take the sump cover off the bottom of the engine (drain the oil first!) and look at the oil for pieces of metal, then have a look for myself at the big ends and anything else visible.

Might not be just as simple though but I'm sure the right honourable Mr Pavelin will jump in soon.

thanks for the quick reply,

it already had one of the injectors reconditioned when i got it cos it was leaking. i've been running a dose of deisel redex through the system every second tank or so... is this something i can check myself?

Wouldn't hurt to pop out the injectors and have a look at them. Look for burnt veggie oil and/or gunge around the nozzles. Looking up the nozzles might be more tricky.

would that cause the banging then? is that like a misfire? it does feel like the air is pulsing back through the intake when it bangs.  This is my first deisel engine so a bit unfamiliar with the workings...

It's chucked a pushrod out from under a rocker arm. Take the rocker cover off and put it back in.

Could be that too (probably/hopefully is). The veggie oil and an uncanny resemblence to my problem made me think otherwise.

there are two common 2.5TD failures that I'm aware of- first one is connected strictly to the heads and require new ones = big $.

The second one is indeed caused by self de-tightening of the rocker bolts (due to vibrations). Wouldn't hurt to check. If it's the cause, and they didn't damage anything else, then tighten it well with some thread locker, to make it fine forever  :wink:

Dr Mike is right. I know this from experience. If you can hear funny noises from your air intake also defo that.

forget thinking the worst do what Mike P suggested.

take the rocker cover box off and you should find a pushrod that has jumped out of the rocker cup, maybe two. this is a known problem with this age of diesel jeep. remove the rocker(s) in question line the pushrod and tighten back down, with the engine running and these loose it does sound like a bag of nails and with no power. when i owned mine i welded some nuts onto the rocker arm cup to stop this happening. it should take you 10 mins at the most you dont nee to remove the rocker fully just enough to slip the push rod back in place.
