Rusty sump on WJ V8 4.7

I have a sump pan that is going porous!
Anyone know where I can get a replacement at a reasonable price?
Are there any tips for removing the old and installing new?        :100: :100:
I seem to remember someone, somewhere, talking about a silicone rubber lining/ coating as a cure for porous sump!
Last one on a Honda was a pain to weld so looking to renew or coat this time.
Suggestions gratefully received!

I'm pleased that you are getting a laugh!
I am a newbie to Jeeps but will learn!      Searching for posts on here re sumps turns up zilch!
I know the laminated pans are a pain and the gasket is unusual however there are several schools of thought on dropping pans, repairing in-situ etc etc
Many people advocate JB or Devcon and rustoleum and an in-situ patch up!
Many say you have to drop the exhaust to drop the pan but that looks difficult!
Many others say in addition, raise the engine?

These are the instructions I would prefer to follow .....
drain the oil remove the bracket on the back of the oil pan that connects the engine block to the lower trans bell housing and remove. Unbolt all the oil pan bolts. To drop it down it has to go forward first.  Drop the front axle link by Unbolting it at the axle [not the frame] and drop it down out of the way. With the pan dropped down unbolt the oil pump pickup tube. [Two bolts in the back, one in the center and a bolt at the oil pump in front.] Then slide the pan forward, drop the back down between the exhaust pipes.
Is this the best method?
I would however like to know the most economic source of new pans in the U.K. if there are any, as I know there was an international shortage earlier this year with both Mopar and Omix being very difficult to find and I think expensive but as a wrinkly old fart on a pension I need to watch the pennies and plan ahead.

cheapest option will be used, if you want to go new either go dealer or buy from the states, but compare delivery between vendor and bundlebox before you order.

I think its fair to say that I'm surprised to hear of a sump pan rusting away, dents and tears yes, but never seen a rusted sump. even the sump off a 30 year old engine I'm prepping at the moment only had surface rust after being stood outdoors for over a year, a wire brush, acid inhibitor and a few coats of heat proof enamel and looks like new again

Pans were changed for the 4.7 engines i the WJ models.
It is something to do with the moisture trap formed in the steel laminations apparently.
There are many hundreds of V8 WJs and Dodge 1500s needing sumps worldwide which is why the replacements were in short supply!
Most secondhand are suspect if you believe posts on other forums!

You could also try sending a PM to Carlos Fandango.  He's the resident WJ breaker on Birties.

Dunno if he's got any WJ's with nackered engines but he will do you a good deal for sure.  :icon_super:

Im not laughing man..sympathising...mine had the same issue!

Westbury.. local jeep specialist quoted IIRC £235 to replace the pan

I painted the pan in suitable primer plus 2 coats of some stuff called Rustoleum (like Hammirite but more flexible)

Never got chance to see if it worked tho.. :banghead:

Great info and a valuable site to bookmark however POR has limitations and any trace of oil will cause it to lose adhesion and various people have had failures with this product due to oil or greas contamination. To work at any-wear like an acceptable level the sump still has to be dropped and degreased, structurally reinforced and then treated with POR !!
That is why I am looking to replace the sump eventually!
Meanwhile a drain prior to oil change, external de-scale and degrease and treatment with JB weld  and paint with Rustoleum will hopefully provide temporary solution until an economic source for a new pan can be found!

But I love your screen name It refers to the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury but I know it better as a beer.
Shepherd Neame produce some fine brews and The Bishops Finger I seem to [somewhat vaguely] recall is an excellent brew!

I would seriously drop Carlos a PM, I know he has some WJ's in at the moment.

I inspected mine when it was last serviced and its ok for now.

But failed its MOT, sorry i knowJay not a laughing matter for sure, Jeep-Chrysler Breakers i have used in the past is 01254301021, they have had everything i need if nothing else helps
