Yeah, we've got one too.

Ours is a Navman but it looks just like a regular palmtop and has all the regular features of both satnav and palmtop.

It's portable and can be used in either Jeep as it's not wired in. Dead easy to use just put address in an away you go.

I've been looking at these as well!

The 'tom tom go' seems pretty fool proof but at £360, i 'll have to wait til the price comes down to about 12p before i get one though :?

Agree that the Navman is good, I use the one that slips onto my Compaq PDA.  Freezes up on the odd occassion but gives great directions and makes finding offroad sites a piece of piss - as long as you have an accurate location in the first place.

Ha, just did this for someone else....

Quote
Just had a look on ebay and....

Garmin Etrex's (The yellow one like mine) are going for ~ £50 or Garmin Geko 201 (New version, smaller - 101 is not usable!!!) ~£45
An alternative to these are the Bluetooth GPS units which seem to be going for ~£50 on Ebay, Try to get one that takes AA or AAA batteries and buy yourself a good NIMH charger and batteries from 7dayshop (See memory card links below) Or you might want one with a car power adaptor. obviously no stand alone unit, but you can shove the gps unit in the hilift box and have a "Clear" view of the sky, and the Ipaq would still work around the car (~10M max)
I had a look for CF and SD GPS cards but they seem really expensive for a half reasonable one. be careful

Ipaq 2210 ~£170

1gb SD £49 - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/normal_ ... rds=1gb+sd, might be cheaper on ebay
1gb CF £52 - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/normal_ ... rds=1gb+cf
you could probably get away with a 512mb of either type.

Link cable for either GPS is available here http://gpsbitz.co.uk/gpsbitz_store/view ... oduct=I38E for £30 + Postage I guess.
If you are a dab hand with a soldering iron, then http://www.nomad.ee/micros/etrex.shtml and http://pfranc.com/cgi-bin/pub/c_uk/Garm ... ?pid=ePlug are useful links (first on is wiring Diags, second is where to get a decent GPS Connector for)

This is where I got my cable from http://www.psionleads.freeserve.co.uk/prices.htm £50....!

These are probably useful if you want to connect to your GPSIII (or was it a 5) on the dash too.

As for Software... I'll give you a tour and talk to you about it when we meet up....

At last a subject I know loads about ;)

You have mi number, give me a shout as I can talk about them all day :)

Garmin Quest.  256 Mb, portable (20 hours battery life) waterproof to 2 meters, shockproof.  Draw backs - small screen.

Give these guys a ring - http://http://www.gsdnav.co.uk/ - very helpful and knowledgeable, and good prices.  Their web site gives lots of info.

Forgot to mention that these things are meant to save marriages - 'cause rather than blaming each other when you get lost, you both blame the sat nav.  8)

KD,you should have said as old Tank here has 3 of them in total,2 Ipaqs and a Toshiba. The Toshiba and the Ipaq just need the Tom Tom system re-installing as they`ve been allowed to go flat and they revert back to factory installed programs when that happens

Advantage of the PDA / GPS setup is.

MP3 Player
Contacts *
Calendar *
Games
OS Maps
Point to Point Road directions
Speed Camera Db
Porn Store (Joke)

2210 has Bluetooth built in, but not Wireless Networking. Also has CF and SD expansion cards so 2Gb if you want it, Most the other Ipaqs only have one slot. XDA II's are god too if you are on O2 (Or whatever network it is)

* need to link to Outlook, not sure if Express works with it.

Ahh, but just did a Punch event where they gave you the grid ref's.... with GPS you can get straight to them.... :) (and that's without all the mapping software, just a little Garmin etrex base version)

I like to know exactly where I am when laning too.... it saves you moving off the byway accidentally. I know peeps that have got "Lost" on Salisbury plain and had to be escorted off by the MOD Police :)

Incidentally, if anyone fancies a day out early Sept.... I'll be taking the Jeep then hopefully..... http://http://www.jbs4x4club.com/jbs_events_2004.htm

Paper maps are only as good as the reader.....

There is a system that includes nearly every thing you can wish for in a PDA:

ipaq 6510 = phone, gprs, gps, software, bluetooth, wireless, infrared etc etc and only 421GBP! :cough:

or the iPaq 6515 = as above but with a camera

:smt032 I'm surrounded by Technophobes... :smt024

What confuses me is that you're all sitting here using computers... but don't understand them :) guess that's just how good Technology has got.
I remember the day when... :)

PDA's are just small computers or Mini Laptops. No, you can't run the latest version of Doom on them (It's a game for those that don't know) The Ipaq 2210 is a 400Mhz cpu. Or in computer terms a 0.4Ghz Cpu. It has 64Mb Base memory, the average home pc has min 256Mb. The SD and CF cards are like removable hard disks. you install stuff on them and can swap them about as needed, bit like taking photo's on a digital camera... ish...

Well, you see it's like this.....
Some of the PDAs are only 32Mb and some even smaller than that.... this means that you can't run as much at the same time as you run out of RAM. same with the processor speed, the Ipaq 1710 only has a 203Mhz processor... so half as fast... especially when you have just taken a wrong turn and want it to calculate a new route for you....

It's all down to 1s and 0s....
4 nibbles in a bit
8 Bits in a Byte
1024 bytes in a Kilobyte
1024 Kb in a MegaByte
1024Mb in a GigaByte

Besides, the paper map won't shout Turn left at the next roundabout.

Tomtom got me all the way down past Grenoble last year (10 hours) without a wrong turn. and all the way back too. Past Paris as well. And I didn't have to get the girly to read the map once.... (Let alone try and turn it round so that it faced the way we were heading)
