Title: 97tj build ready for breakout
Post by: bisleywrangler on April 15, 2016, 10:18:28 PM
Ok so booked and paid for breakout.
Just thought I'd do a little thread on my progress towards getting the JT ready. Here's how it looks now.

To do list:
Front wings and arch extensions
Rear wings and arch extensions
Power steering lines
Bleed brakes properly
Cooling fan
Fuel tank, fabricate or fit the standard one in the back
Plate in rear tub
All lights and number plates
Front propshaft
Exhaust system
Air intake tube to air box.
MOT.

It would be nice to fit the front and rear winches but not sure I'll have time to to the bumpers/mounts.

Bit of a challenge but I'm gunna give it a go.

If you are going to get that done for Breakout then I need to pull my finger out and sort the YJ, it only needs a bit of tinkering in comparison!

Good luck, it looks awesome  :greggmo:

Looking good, drag it there on a trailer and 75% of that list can wait..

So today I got the brakes bled properly, coolant leak fixed, power steering plumbed in, rear rub box designed, hydraulic handbrake bracket designed, so some progress.........not a lot but in the right direction [emoji373]

You won't get an MoT with a hydraulic handbrake.

You won't get an MoT with a hydraulic handbrake.

Indeed, do transition brake and keep hydraulic for fiddle (remove leavers for test) the world of compliance just SUCKS !!!

Hydraulic handbrake is fine as long as it's a separate system to the foot brake

Got all the arms bolted up tight today with all necessary spacers made, painted the coilover mounts and fitted all the right length bolts. Fitting front wings tomorrow evening and making a start on the tube arches.

The regulations are pretty clear.....

Section 3.1 Parking brake control.

Information.

"Hydraulic parking brakes as a sole means of operation are not acceptable on vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968......."

Reasons for rejection

"2. For vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968 the parking brake is not capable of being maintained in operation by direct mechanical action only."

That being the case as I thought it may be, I have my fall back option for mot time, i have a laser cut disc that i'll weld to the transfer case output yoke and a mini cooper rear calliper with handbrake cable I'll mount of the transfer case tail bolts. Bit of a bodge but only got to pass the MOT as I'll use the hydro one after that.

I wasted 2 hours yesterday trying to get the bloody engine running again, i'd tidied up the engine loom etc after test running it and moved the jeep to work. It was turning over but not firing up. I couldn't check for a spark as I was alone so it came down to checking wiring etc. No fault codes either. Eventually traced the problem to the bloody fuel pump today. Cleaned it out and the engine fired up after a quick fuel system bleed. Not getting a chance to work on it now until Sunday so time is slipping away from me.

Bit more progress today, exhaust downpipe and collector made. High steer spacers sorted. Footwells cleaned up and painted. Electric fan fitted. On the down side I discovered a big oil leak from the rear main seal.

Definitely making good progress, main issues now are body work, front prop and the fuel tank setup. Should be ok though. My biggest problem is the leaking rear main seal. I've just ordered one from rock auto so hopefully it'll be here in time for me to fit it.

Streuth, what size are those beauties...... And what became of the 40's you had bead locked ready to go......?? :icon_biggrin:

As regards 16.5 wheels......Hummer H1 but good luck in the UK and you might need to recentre them as they have 7" backspace.

When I was thinking of Unimog tyres on a 20" I came across these people who would make me a plain steel 8 on 6.5" wheel as a 20" with 4" backspace for £145 plus vat.
They are D and  S factors in Donnington 01779 820309

I still have the 40's, they are on ebay again but I might need them for the mot as the ones on it are shot away. They are actually 16.5" though so I may be able to modify them. I'll have to get them blasted and see what remains. Oh and the new ones are 44 18.50 R16.5. I love the look of them, big tyre small wheel [emoji3]

Whoaa! Awesome.

That torque twist could be interesting on a side slope!

Just love that..... Those 44s suit it fine......

So??? Next ???? Anti roll bars :icon_twisted:

That's in 2wd low so the roll is exaggerated a little. I think I'll fit some antiroll bars for road use though, it really was a little disconcerting sat in it. Funny though hahaha

Just discovered that Ruffstuff do some epic anti roll bar systems......spendy though....

But I find them useful to look and copy :icon_twisted:

I've been looking at the currie antirock. Pricey as well. I was thinking I could just use a some torsion bars from a vw in some form or other.

My other more complex option would be to link the front right and rear left together and front left and rear right,  so each connected pair rise and fall together. Greatly reducing roll and pitch but not affecting articulation.

I was thinking that all this splined stuff is bound to be spendy but back in the day anti roll bars were a straight with 90 degree bends on the end ...... I suppose that the effectiveness of the system can be controlled by the length of the 90degree bends and the thickness of the solid rod.
It's all cheap stuff from the steel stockist. Maybe a few goes might. Be needed at getting it right but at only a few £ a metre it's worth a go.

Vw beetle has torsion front suspension where the torsion bar is a series of leafs no complex spines

The rear is also torsion but has splines

Did you make the wheel arches?

I never realised the beetle was like that! That would be a lot easier than getting a spline put in something.

Yeah I got them laser cut out, folded them up and welded all the folds together. They are a bit rough in the flesh but will do until I get round to the cage.
