GC rear suspension
« on: August 06, 2016, 04:18:26 PM »

So, the rear shocks on my 2001 Grand Cherokee creak occasionally and the anti-roll bar bushes also need replacing. Being my first Jeep I thought I'd garner opinions before going down the wrong route. I drive mainly on A roads but live in the middle of nowhere so some of the roads around me can be covered in mud and my backup routes to/from work include greenlanes and dirt tracks so I want something that will work for at least light off-road use. I still have a list of jobs to do on the Jeep (blend doors next) so budget is a little tight but if it's worth paying the extra I'm happy to consider it.

What is the consensus on polybushes? The Superpro recommended by 4play Jeep aren't to expensive but I'd be wary of them being to noisy and too firm. I'd like to reduce the bounce at the back but not at the expense of a noisy, rock hard ride. It is a Jeep, not a sports car after all.

Is there a consensus as to good reasonably priced shocks? I've been looking at Bilstein, mainly because I put them on an Explorer a few years back, but I think I'd be looking at B4s rather than B6s on cost grounds. Are there any others I should be considering for this vehicle?

Replaced all our TJ suspension with Old man Emu kit, its the best mix of on & off road ability & has been fitted by many, not sure about a Grand but would look at what's available from OME before spending your wedge.

Thanks Gaz. OME's website linked through to Arbil UK and it looks like there are 2 options, Nitrocharger or Nitrocharger Sport. The Nitrochargers are £112rrp (on a par with Bilstein B6) but the sports are £28rrp! For the price difference I assume I'd be best steering clear of the sports? They sound too cheap and I can't seem to find what the difference is either. I've emailed Arbil so perhaps I'll get an answer on the difference between them.

Just to be clear, I'm not just looking for the cheapest. However, if there's a bargain to be had... How would the Edelbrok compare to Bilstein or OME? By the time you've added shipping and VAT they'd be getting close to what I could get Bilstein B4s for.

As said above, the Edelbrocks were THE fix for wobbly WJ rear suspension a few years ago when lots of members had WJs for off-roading, towing or daily drive duties. All 3 brands are at a good quality level, I've had both old man emu and Bilstein and would say ome were a bit better made and slightly more comfortable on my Jeep.

Thanks IOM, I had a look at Summit and couldn't find any Edelbrock for GCs. So I've ordered all four OME Nitrocharger Sport for £120 delivered.

Now to decide whether to go Poly or rubber for the bushes!

I ordered some cheap bushes from rock auto - think they were Dorman brand and they turned out to be hard poly and worked really well.

How's the ride and noise on polys? I've heard they make the ride harder and make more noise, given that most of my driving is A road cruising I don't want to ruin the comfortable environment too much.
