More MIL / CRD Issues
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:16:22 PM »

Afternoon all,

First off, I brought a Petrol for a reason - reliability.

So MIL CRD wont start, when I was messing with the TCM, I also noticed both no1 and 2 injectors leaking.

Plus there is no glow plug light coming on in the dash,

Now the Jeep wont start, going over later to jump it and go for a run but will the injectors put more strain on starting and why no glow plug light?

I have checked the replays and they all work ok.

Cheers

James

Leaking injector will not affect starting or running.

It just spreads gunk and a nasty smell.

So must be something else unrelated.  Check fuses for glow plug.

Don't set fire to it yet.

Wasn't showing any codes,

I will check fuses when I go over later.

At least I know its not the injectors causing the laboured starting.

Without the glow plugs working that would put a strain on it would it?

no glowplugs would make it difficult to start, but unless its bloody cold it should still start. Burn it  :jump_125:

It has been staring after a few cranks of the engine, but as they are only doing very short runs 2 or 3 mile at most its not getting any charge.

Think my 90 is the same,as it had a swap over from petrol to 300tdi i dont think the glow plugs get heated and that can take a bit of turning over to start, and of course diesels take more power starting especially when colder so im guessing if they arent doing any distance the battery is slowly losing charge

Ok, so if tonight all fuses for the glow plugs are ok, and I know the relays are working.

What's next for the lack of glow plug light?

but as they are only doing very short runs 2 or 3 mile at most

That will kill any diesel by default  :icon_sad:

Right, glow plugs ok and light on dash is now working ok.

But still won't start, not even trying. Tried to jump it, even put my new battery on it and still nothing.

Dash lights are bright and don't dim when the key is turned.

Could the immobiliser be causing an issue as the battery has been off for a few days charging?

Mine has never had an issue after a flat battery, if the key isn't reading correctly the yellow key light stays on

No key light goes out. Rob suggested Starter motor wiring / motor could be at fault.

Its gone from starting, all be it struggling at times no nothing.

Thoughts?

No dim lights would say that starters not drawing any power. If immobilser would it turn over but not start or does the immobiliser cut power to the starter?.What about checking battery/earth connections

Does it - crank over on the starter?

Does it - spluter on attempted starting?

CRD runs at a stupid pressure to give atomise the diesel making running easier and more efficient, advice is don't crack the injector pipes while cranking and someone in close proximity.
glow plugs on a CRD are only effective when the temperature is below -5 deg C. shouldn't need them at these current temperatures

if the key isn't doing anything then i would be considering the imobiliser system having a problem. Try boosting the battery with a jump to see if it will be enough to kick the immobiliser into life. some of these modern engines will not fire unless a minimum voltage is seen.

probably totally useless but another idea

Tried all the battery option and boosting. That's not the cause.

Key is ok, as the immobiliser / key malfunction lights goes out so that's not at fault.

Ok back to basics.....

Get multimeter and set to volts put on battery positive POST and check volts - attempt to crank engine and measure volts - same process but from the clamp/wire after battery post.

Now with said multimeter set to continuity and do the same battery POST check with the earth - now check with body earth on cranking.

what are the readings?

Arse, back home now. Will get MIL's partner to do it tomorrow Peter. He is a sparky so should be able to cope with it.

When my diesal Jeep did this....

It was a fuse that had blown...  Took me ages to suss it , as the handbook said that particular fuse was for the lights...it wasn,t it was for the ignition circuit....

I have removed every fuse in the PCM and under the dash, not one was blown.

Suggested IOM earth checks, but MIL - Partner was perplexed so will have to wait for me or the AA to take a further look.
