What box should I be looking out for?
« on: June 26, 2012, 03:56:16 PM »

Now I have the amc 360 I'm going to go the full hog and put it onto a manual gearbox just to see how much fun it is

Obviously older boxes are harder to come by and my sr4 is a bit weak and won't mate to the amc block so I am keeping my eye out for a new box with preferably an amc block bell house as better than spending money modding a weak box bell house to suit

I have had some good advice from Pete on what will fit the sr4 but does anyone know which boxes I should keep an eye out for that will fit straight to the amc?

I am told tremec and Borg Warner t4/5 but no one sells them as that they sell them as jeep gearbox etc and were the ever fit to different cars as a search on e blag comes up with old jag boxes etc

Thanks

You sound like you need the box and bellhousing out of a Rambler Matador..these things were super grunty and weighed almost twice what your truck does. I used to own one in OZ and believe me it could take all the hammering you could give it. With the LSD I could lay a twin set of rubber tracks for over 50 metres, time after time after time..never managed to break it!

Rambler Classics and Hornets also had them.

I got the T176 4 speed (which bolts onto the SR4 bell housing) and more than happy with it

also remember a different box may lead to new prop shafts, it did for me, shorter rear and longer front.

so a T150 fits straight to it then? might be worth trying to source

having looked at everyones comments i have decided i want an MJ and a matador as well now!!!!!

i dont think the xj boxes fit as they are the chrysler engine and shame as would be v cheap and could be worth looking at if making up a bellhouse i guess

Any box that was mated to the 232, 258 or the 304/360/390/401 will fit without modification, but you may need to alter your propshaft length to suit. I have found that the T150 works really well behind the V8
