Title: Transmission and transfer case oil..
Post by: Ezz on January 11, 2017, 06:54:27 PM
There seems a lot of conflicting views on this,

I'd like to change the oil in the manual gearbox and t-case in the Tj
What oil should I use?

If it's an NV3500 it's a Crown part number that's cheaper to by fromLighties than Jeep.
It is special and needed for that box.

The 97 4.0L 5-speed is an AX-15. Aisin Warner (manufacturer) recommended fill is synthetic 10W-30 engine oil. They changed it from the incorrectly advised GL5 gear oil as most contain sulphurous compounds that can eat away at the yellow metal synchros. The proper spec should have been GL3/GL4 gear oil which can be hard to get which is why the engine oil is now specced.

Generally, Redline MTL and MT-90 fluids are regarded as the best fluids for the AX boxes. I use MTL, it's spendy at about £16-18 a quart though. FSM states fluid capacity is 3.15 litres (3.32 quarts).

The transfer case uses ATF. Jeep just specify whatever ATF is in the auto boxes for any model year. That's so owners don't have different ATFs and risk using the wrong fluid for topping up. Because of that people will quote different ATFs based on what they know from their model year.

In truth, ANY ATF will do. FSM states 1.5L capacity on manual models.

Make sure fill plugs come loose before removing the drain plugs. On the AX-15, the fill plug is on the opposite side to the drain plug. This shows the locations http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/ax-15/ax-15-1.htm (http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/ax-15/ax-15-1.htm). The socket/spanner size is 15/16" which is a shade under 24mm.

The NV transmission is on later ones - I think 2001 on but you should check to be certain. Dexron II / III is good in the transfer case and cheap

Why bother with the engine oil, GL4 gear oil is readily available and that will have all the EP additives in it required for a gearbox.

Yeah I found that, but I thought Jonny said fully synthetic, all I could find was 10w-30 4T motorbike or lawnmower oil..

Might go for the GL4..

I got some Manual Transmission fluid from Eurocarparts for my Dad's old XJ. It worked and made the dodgy change into reverse better. I think it met GL4 standard but that was a while ago now and my memory is useless.
