WG dies then restarts ok.
« on: March 16, 2017, 07:49:55 PM »

Hoping someone can help with this one.
Last night my wife was driving the Jeep home when it died on her.
She polled over to the side of the road and rang me, I told her to try restarting it.
It restarted fine and she got home OK then.
Took it out for a short run today and it seemed fine.

I've just checked it for codes and it has the following.
P0620
P0836
P0702
P0700
P1130

They cover anything from 4wd sensor to trans issue and generator fault.

The Jeep has recently been to the garage for MOT service etc.
I'm wondering if the faults are maybe misleading and maybe it was an issue with air in the fuel system from when they fitted the new fuel filter ?
The other alternative could be a battery connection, when I got it back all the settings were back on default and I had to re-enter the radio code, but I don't think that would cause it to die and then restart ok.

Does either of these sound likely?

First things first, why was the battery disconnected ?

Probably best to clear all fault codes & then just use it & check for fault codes after each use to see if there is anything showing up, as you say, with so many faults showing, they could be masking the actual root cause

Ok know what the problem is now hopefully
It died on the way to work this morning.
RAC guy reckons it's a fuel rail pressure issue
Getting the Jeep recovered to the mechanics and let them sort it out.

Hmmmm .... deteriorating plastic fuel lines, grommets, rubber seals cracking ? ..... HP or LP fuel pump?

Been there, done that  :icon_winkle:

The mechanic specialises in Sprinter vans etc, so knows the 2.7 engine quite well.
So hopefully it won't take too long to fix......

If the codes point to fuel rail pressure, that could be a red herring.
I had the same on my KJ. Turned out to be the crank shaft sensor.

RAC guy got it to kick over by spraying easy start in, which was why he thought it was a fuel supply issue ?

Sounds like a very thorough diagnosis. [emoji15]

Not saying that my suggestion is based on a thorough investigation. Just another option based on limited information, worth considering.

Suggestion is appreciated, I'll let the mechanic know to check it just in case.

Just had the mechanic ring me.
They primed the fuel system and the Jeep started OK.
He 's been driving it around and back and forth to see if it'll stop again but he hasn't been able to get it to go wrong since !
What he found, when checking it over was that the fuel filter had been removed completely at some point and it was probably some crap from the tank that caused the issue and it had cleared when they primed the system.
He's going to put a fuel filter back in to hopefully stop this happening again.

Any ideas as to why someone would remove the fuel filter completely ?

Just to close this one, the filter and bracket has been replaced fitted.
The mechanic had to resort to Ebay for the fuel filter bracket as he couldn't find anyone selling one otherwise.
The Jeep's been fine ever since  :greggmo:
