will a later front axle shaft fit a 1995 xj with ABS
« on: May 29, 2017, 11:32:04 AM »

Hi everyone

I have tried searching but cannot seem to find an definite answer.  Will a axle shaft say from a 1997 xj fit my 1995 xj or will any other model fit aswell?  I have removed my drivers side one to replace the U joint, but noticed that the ABS tone ring is looking a bit worse for wear, it still works but looking at getting another shaft to replace it and passenger side if it goes through MOT. Then keep originals as spares.

The axle I have is Dana M30/181MM Front Axle.

The Date the Jeep was first Registered 27 September 1995

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's the piece, thanks.  Just wondering about the full shafts, so could get a spare set.

Thanks again

They will - you can also just change the tone ring

Thanks for the info. Just looked up the tone ring, not to bad on price  I take it they come off with heat and a puller and go back on with heat, to expand then allowed to cool?

If the old one is buggered then just use a chisel to get them off - I have done this on ones and they have come off OK.

As for refitting heating is a good idea - but the interference fit is not that severe really

Just be careful with the hammer because the tone rings are quite brittle if you are clumsy with a lump hammer  :icon_redface:

Well finally got the axle back in and everything bolted up.  Had fun removing the U joints, not sure but think they were the originals, the Jeep was not looked after before I had it.  I had to use a Grinder and cut the Cross out of the joints.  Then the caps would not move with the proper tool, so ended up the old fashioned way of Hammer and Vise. Now going to look at getting some spare shafts and fit some new tone rings.

Thanks for all the info.  It has been a great help.
